A medieval silver cut halfpenny folded over a silver cut farthing. Only the obverse of the folded cut halfpenny is visible. The obverse is worn. Obv. description: Crowned bust facing, sceptre in right hand Obv. inscription: HENRIC[VS RE]X The inscription indicates the larger coin is a cut halfpenny of the Short Cross coinage issued under Henry II, Richard, John and Henry III. The obverse is too worn to determine which ruler it is. As silver coins of the medieval kings of England, these two coins will be of over 90% fine metal. The pair of interlinked coins fulfil the Treasure Ac…

A hoard of 14 Henry II 'Tealby' pennies. All of the coins are of the cross and crosslets (Tealby) type of Henry II (1158-1180). Although coins of this type are relatively common compared to other twelfth century issues, they are still rare enough that there is no reason to doubt that a group of fourteen all found close together constitute a single hoard, rather than a series of independent random losses, especially as there is no other evidence (to the best of my knowledge ) to indicate the sort of extensive use in the late 12th century that might suggest multiple losses. As is typica…

A 'lump' of fused silver pennies, dating to the decades around 1300, but otherwise are not identifiable. The group weighs 8.43g, so there may be 6 or 8 coins there, although most are damaged. As English silver coins they will be made to the established sterling standard, slightly over 90% fine metal. In principle, therefore, the group appears to fulfil the criteria of Treasure, according to the terms of the Act. Dr Barrie Cook

The English, Irish and Scottish coins can be regarded as following the sterling standard of c. 92.5% fine metal. The fineness of the continental sterling is less certain, but it is around 90% silver. The coinage of Edward I and …
