Fragment of a Post Medieval cast copper alloy dress or strap fitting, possibly a hooked tag (1500-1700 AD). The trapezoidal fragment represents probably around 40% of the original artefact. The tag or fitting might originally have been hand-shaped, and probably would have contained an openwork flower with six petals, two of which now remain. The fitting has moulded decoration on the obverse and a flat back which is undecorated. The shortest of the outside edges has a scar at each corner, where what was probably a rectangular attachment loop has broken off. The fragment is very worn and…

A copper-alloy S-shaped belt fastener of probable late 16th to 17th century AD date (H. Geake; 2001; pp. 36). The cast object takes the form of the heads and necks of two serpents or birds. The moulded surface decoration is executed on all sides of the fitting but is heavily corroded and difficult to decipher. On each head the eyes and open mouth are visible and there is crest on top. The necks are of sub-circular section and increase in diameter towards the centre of the object, where there is a moulded band. The surface appears to have been tinned. The fastener measures 30.1mm …

An incomplete copper-alloy belt mount of probable 17th or 18th century AD date. It has been suggested that these mounts may have been worn with naval uniform. For a similar example see PAS record no. BH-F68964. The piece is roughly tongue-shaped, tapering from top to bottom, with a rounded terminal. At the upper end is a flat protrusion - this is part or all of the tab which would have been bent backwards in order to secure the mount to the belt. The mount itself has moulded decoration on its upper surface. At the top, where the object is at its widest, there appears to be the head …

A probable copper-alloy disc-attachment of late Roman to early Early-medieval date. This category of artefact was identified by Hawkes and Dunning (1961; pp. 65) as an example of the so-called 'Soldiers and settlers' material of the late 4th to 5th century AD. It is thought that the function of such objects was to link two or more leather belts or straps. The object has a circular disc with a small projection at the top and an integral tang at the bottom. The bottom of the disc tapers smoothly into the tang, the end of which is bent forwards so that the bulbous end (possibly the res…
