Cast copper alloy circular buckle, dating from the 15th century. The frame is broken at one area, where it meets the bar. The bar appears to have been soldered onto the frame, as this is resting on the reverse of the frame rather than cast integrally on the inner rim of the frame. The bar is distended; this is probably a result of damage as opposed to decoration.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy buckle loop, probably of Early Medieval date. The plate and tongue are missing. There are signs of stress from bending on the reverse of the object. The object is D-shaped in section. The face has been chip-carved with angled notches on the outer edges. The inner edge of the loop has six evenly-spaced, slightly larger notches, three on each side of the platform-notch for the pin. Just before both the breaks on the loop are cuts, removing the curve of the object's face and creating a rectangular section. This was possibly intended to accommodate the plate.

A cast copper alloy fragment of an openwork buckle. The buckle has a circular tab at one corner; coming down from this is an openwork triangle with three broken tabs protruding from the side. Below the triangle is a diamond; on the diamond, triangle and circular tab is a circle-dot motif, incised on the surface of the panel. Coming down from the diamond are three struts, interrupted by a bar. On the central strut, where it intersects with the bar, is cross-hatching. Corrosion does not allow any other decoration to be discerned on this bar. The struts are broken shortly below the bar. …
