A cast lead alloy shot/ball of medieval date, probably for use in a hand cannon or mounted gun from the 15th century (possibly linked the war of the roses, and the battle of Mortimers Cross some 2.5 miles away). The surface is abraded, probably from movement in the soil by farm machinery and as such it is unknown as to whether it has been fired or not. There are lead shot/balls of 23mm in diameter that have been recovered from both Bosworth and Towton battlefields and this is the documented size of many of the handguns used at the time by English garrisons…

A group of eleven lead shots dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1600-1800). The objects are spherical in shape. Four have chips giving them a hexagonal profile, two having visible casting lines, and one appears to have a a flat circular protrusion that may be the remains of a sprue. The objects are light to dark grey in colour and range in size from circa 9mm to 17mm in diameter (see below)
It is difficult to precisely assign projectiles to specific calibres of gun because most excavated shot will have lost weight, there was a huge variety of firearms, balls were imperfect…

A cast lead alloy weight or shot / ball for use in a pistol of post medieval 1600-1800 date. The object is sub-spherical in shape with a relatively even surface. A length of iron wire extends from the upper surface of the ball which is highly irregular. The colour of ball is a light white.
Similar shot have been dated to the later Post-Medieval period however the date range should extend into the early Modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. Musket balls are discussed in Courtney's "Small Arms Accessories of the Mid-Seventeenth Century" (19…

A cache/hoard of 29 cast lead alloy musket shots ranging in diameter from 9-15mm. It includes 5 shots of very small size (c. 9mm in diameter), 23 of medium size (ca. 10-15mm in diameter) and one large shot of about 15/16mm in diameter. None of the shots have been fired and some still display casting seams. One shot seems to have been cast just before losing/hiding the cache.
Although found together, no evidence of a bag or pouch remains.

A selection of 141 iron round shots, lead shots and stone shots recovered by Eric and Gordan Hazelton from the intertidal zone in Harwich Harbour between 1972 and 1988. The 141 shots show a wide variety of calibres and probably come from a number of different artillery pieces. The lead and stone shots are the same type as those recovered from the wreck of ‘The Mary Rose’ which sank in 1545.
