The badge is in the form of a robed figure but many of the details are obscured by damage and wear. The figure faces forwards and appears to have long hair which flows over the shoulders, or may be wearing a hood. the face is indistinct. The figure's right arm is indistinct, and the left arm is broken just below the elbow. It would probably have projected to the side. The figure has a clear rope like belt but details of the lower body are not so clear. The figure may be keeling, or standing. A base across the bottom is wider than the figure but is probably broken at both ends. On the reverse, from the back of the base, projects a copper alloy wire which would once have joined to the back of the head where there is a scar to form a loop for attachment. The reverse of the figure is flat. There is a deep gouge across the front of the body which is probably damage rather than moulding, but it is patinated to the same dusty grey as the rest of the badge. The finder sees this person as a hooded monk, but it can also be interpreted as a woman. Identification as a pilgrim badge is not certain. At the top of the figure is a curved moulding which is possibly representative of a tree. The archer to the left is stood in profile with his arrow drawn on the bow. He appears to be wearing military attire. The archer on the right is stood in broadly the same stance, although his clothing is not clear. On the reverse is a copper alloy wire loop, otherwise it is undecorated. The badge is dark green in colour and in good condition. It weighs 3.5g, measuring 26.58mm in length and 25mm in width. The badge depicts an event dating to the 9th century: the martyrdom of St Edmund. The central figure is thought to be St Edmund, an East Anglian King. The front of the badge is moulded to represent the head of St Thomas Becket, suggesting that this was a product of his shrine at Canterbury, Kent. Only the head and the Bishop's mitre survive, but his body would probably have been represented too. The archbishop wears a mitre which has a central vertical panel defined by rows of pellets. The panel is decorated with a lattice work of lines with pellets in the lozenges. Further rows of pellets demarcate the band along the base of the mitre, and the sides. These areas are also decorated with pellets. The top of the mitre has broken but it appears to have been topped with a cross. The face has well-defined brows and nose, a little hair on each side of the face, eyes consisting of pronouced raised circles within less well defined almond-shapes and a mouth formed from two short horizontal ridges. The neck is broken. The right side of the badge is bent forwards. There is no evidence of a pin on the reverse. The lead is patinated to a rich honey colour. This type of pilgrim badge is one of a well-known series of badges that are miniature copies of the life-sized enriched mitred-bust reliquary of St Thomas located in Canterbury Catherdral in the 14th century. The bust was adorned with many jewels, which are represented on this lead miniature by the series of moulded pellets. Offerings made at Canterbury Cathedral show that the popularity of the head reliquary peaked in 1420. The badge would have been worn on the hat or on the outer clothing and would have been used as an amulet. The supposed miracle-working powers of reliquaries was also thought to transfer onto the objects copied from them, hence the popularity of pilgrim badges. An inverted, segmented 'U-shaped' feature surrounding her head represents either hair or a halo. The remains of a second, plain border surrounds this feature. Mary wears a long, flowing, vertically-segmented robe, the central column of which is further divided into smaller segments by the use of a series of equally-spaced transverse ridges. At the base of the garment is a band bearing a legend, executed in Gothic script and with a rosette at the start. The level of corrosion and wear means this legend is difficult to decipher; however, 'notre dame' seems probable. The body of Christ, wearing only a loin cloth, is held at the Virgin's waist. The head has been lost but would originally have projected from the left hand side of the badge; the lower legs and feet project from the right hand side. The pin, which is located behind the Virgin's head, survives, albeit in a bent state. A vertical casting seam links the pin with the damaged catchplate. The brooch has been deliberately perforated by a narrow-bladed implement. This perforation is located within Christ's torso, extending along the top edge of the right forearm, which angles across the body. The brooch is bent and corroded. On one surface, there is a crude depiction of the crucifixion. Christ is seen on the cross and he is flanked by two soldiers with spears; the edge of the token has a raised border around the image. The image on the other surface is difficult to interpret but appears to have contained an inscription within a border. The surface of this side has been worn and corroded, and is further damaged by stress marks from the token being folded in half. The may have been a suspension loop at the top of the badge which no longer remains. Edge damage could be where a loop has broken off. There is no other evidence of attachment. Other pilgrim badges which show the crucifixion are known, but only one, from Salisbury Museum, is of the same design as this example. This is Spencer's (1990) no. 73 (fig. 98), a circular badge which depicts the Fountain of Life, i.e. Christ crucified with the blood from his wounds streaming into a circular well or fountain.To either side stand the Virgin Mary and St John, each apparently holding a vessel. The detail on the Yorkshire find is less clear, but if the same scene is depicted, it becomes just the third example of the Fountain of Life known from England. It is thought that the Salisbury example, and a parallel in glass at Marston Bigot, Somerset, are both of Flemish origin and late 15th or early 16th century (Spencer 1990, 38). More distant parallels on the PAS database include two discs decorated on both faces. NCL-47AED3 is a token showing the crucifixion, and NCL-617555 is a badge with a missing loop which shows the crucifixion on one face and St Margaret bursting triumphantly out of the dragon that had just swallowed her on the reverse. The badge is uni-face with a relief decoration on the front and the remains of a simple attachment hook on the reverse. The design is within a raised border and features two cloaked figures facing each other and holding a book over a vertical branch between them. The figure on the left, the Angel Gabriel, is crowned and a row of diagonal lines behind his back may represent wings. The figure on the right, Mary, wears a hooded cloak and lines around her may represent a building. the branch has a vertical stem splitting into five at the top. There is a raised line running across the back of the badge which is either a casting flash or the remains of the hook. The hook on the reverse is now missing, it has broken with a small tear at the top of the badge. It measures 22.6mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 4.01g. The Annunciation is the scene where the angel Gabriel comes to Mary and asks her to bears Gods son. In later Medieval representations she is often shown as interrupted while reading. There were many shrines to Mary throughout England but the most famous was at Walsingham. Spencer (1998:141) states that "Badges depicting the annunciation were an important part of Walsingham's souvenir trade from c.1320-30 until the reformation... The earlier badges, however, were larger and more detailed and they placed the Annunciation within an architectural canopy". Simpler circular badges seem to mostly be 15th or early 16th century in date and this badge may be a Walsingham souvenir of that period, A similar badge can be seen on this database; SOMDOR-7514C8. The face has exaggerated brows and round staring eyes, a straight-sided nose modelled in particularly high relief, a beard shown as straight strokes, and drapery rendered as crude cross-hatching. A hole of diameter 2mm has been drilled at the high hairline. The back is entirely flat, and the object retains its leaden grey colour overall. Few English pilgrim badges depicted bearded subjects: the most commonly rendered male portrait subject, Thomas Becket, was always portrayed clean shaven. St John the Baptist, and the face of Christ as preserved on the Vernicle, were sometimes shown bearded. However, this image resembles no published example viewed by this reporter. The crude modelling, unparalleled status and the unpatinated state of the metal may support an identification of this object as a forgery. It is probably a 'Billy and Charlie' casting of 19th-century date, manufactured with the intention of deceiving antiquarian collectors; the products of such forgers are now of interest to collectors in their own right. The eponymous Bill and Charlie began their career as mudlarks on the Thames foreshore, where pilgrim badges were among the first objects they imitated. It is uncertain whether the hole drilled in this example was for its suspension, permitting it to be worn, or whether it signals its conversion to a fishing line weight. The brooch is oval in plan though somewhat distorted, with a large oval opening in the centre. The frame has a flat outer perimeter which angles upwards and inwards and ends with a flat inner perimeter. The surface of the inner perimeter contains lettering all the way round, but most of it is illegible. A small rectangular hole is placed part way through this inscription, presumably placed just before the beginning. Following the hole the inscription starts with an initial cross. Then follows the letters: IE S(reversed)VS(reversed)[...]?RE[...]S(reversed)?RE[...]DEO. A border of pellets marks the flat outer part of the frame just before it angles upwards. The outer perimeter of the frame is damaged but it is clear that there were once six collets and six busts; only one collet and one bust survive. The bust is too worn to determine any features, however similar brooches often display male and female busts alternately. Similar lead brooches bearing inscriptions that relate to St Thomas Becket are illustrated in Spencer, 'Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges' (London: The Stationary Office, 1998), pp124-127, nos 131-133. The style of lettering on these examples places them in the 14th century, as would the style of lettering on this example. The low relief of Christ indicates that this badge depicts the 'Veronica': the Veronica is the image that was captured on the cloth with which Veronica, a woman of Jerusalem, wiped His face as He carried the Cross to Calvary. This relic, known as the Vernicle in England, was paraded in Rome from 1208 annually, and from the 14th century was exhibited there weekly. By 1450 its cult was very widespread, as devotion to an image (of what was itself a miraculous image) was deemed as efficacious as contact with the original item.
