A near complete late Iron Age/Early Roman copper-alloy crescent type "Aesica" brooch of first century AD date, possibly dating to circa AD 25-100. The brooch comprises an upper curved bow and a lower flat bow. The spring mechanism is similar to the Polden Hill brooches (Aesica, type 3) in that the springs are contained within cylindrical wings which are pierced by a central axis bar. An incomplete cast copper alloy hilt guard of late Iron Age date (c. 1st century BC - 1st century AD) of Piggott's (1950) IVB 'Crown' type and of Stead's (2006, p.13, fig.8) Type viii. The object comprises one end of the guard, which would have been oval, with convex arcs along the upper edge and pointed lobes on the outer edges which produce the characteristic 'crown' form in profile. The sides are decorated with two parallel bands of double rows of punched dots. The lower edge has a lenticular recess to accommodate the blade. A group of 30 copper-alloy pellets and a copper-alloy rod, possibly a forger's group, dating to the Roman period. The rod is cylindrical with one rounded end and one slightly hollwed end. The surfaces are plain, worn and abraded with a light green patination. It measures 32.6mm long, 7.1mm diameter and weighs 7.03 grams.
