A complete cast metal, possibly lead, vessel probably of Medieval date (c.1100-1300). The surface is severely damaged with the majority of the vessel an off-white to grey colour suggestive of a lead item, with patches of blue-green copper staining across the pitted and delaminated surface. The flask has a bulbous body with a broad collar at the shoulder, from which the neck rises vertically to a broad rim. Two opposing looped handles attach to the rim and the mid-point of the neck. Height: 45.5mm. Width: 27.0mm. Depth: 22.0mm

Iron Age copper alloy zoomorphic vessel mount or cup handle of 1st or 2nd century AD date The mount depicts a bird, probably a goose and is incomplete, broken at one end (with a surviving length of 28.5mm, a surviving depth of 23.0mm and a weight of 17.5g). The terminal of the mount is in the form of a bird’s head, with a protruding pointed beak of subtriangular section (3.6mm long). The start of the beak was defined by grooves, now corroded. The head of the goose is globular (with a maximum diameter of 11.5mm) and the eyes are inset with bright blue glass spherical beads (of 1…

A copper alloy mount of Iron Age date, about 100 BC - AD 100, prrobably from a vessel, maybe a handle escutcheon from a bucket. It is zoomorphic and stylised, having the shape of a boar's head and neck. The back of the body is flat and two integral rivets project. The narrow mounting plate is bevelled on the front, making it D shaped in cross-section. The neck of the animal extends from the top of the plate, curving forwards and down. The back of the neck is marked with a series of closely spaced, narrow grooves so that it appears to be serrated, perhaps representing the bristles…

An incomplete cast late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy caprine vessel or bucket mount dating to the first century AD. Most of the goats head remains, one horn is missing. The mount is largely sub-oval in shape and D-shaped in cross section. The front face of the mount is elaborately decorated. The remaining horn projects diagonally to the rear and is roughly 7.5 mm long, it is cylindrical in section and tapers to a blunted point. The top of the mount are decorative forelocks consisting of a raised triangle with rounded edges and central incised line and small recessed pits. …

A Roman copper alloy jug made of sheet metal with a damaged base, present as a separate component. The body is slightly crushed, but is conical with an oval midsection of around 225mm diameter. The base narrows below this into a cylindrical footring of 168mm diameter, now detached, comprised of a lathe-turned circular plate with a soldered sheet metal rim which has broken from the body, probably as a result of plough damage. The body of the jug narrows upwards into a neck which is 42.4mm in diameter. This has a thickened rim with projecting spout and an opening of 32.5mm internal diam…

A fragment of a copper alloy early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) vessel handle. The fragment is roughly S-shaped with a hooked terminal at one end, before it curves round into a longer straight section before curving again at 90 degrees in the opposite direction just behind the break. The outer edge of this inner curve has an elongated sub-oval section attached across it. The reverse of the object is flattened and the outer face bevelled. The surface of the metal is corroded and the breaks well worn. Prof. Chris Skull (pers. com.) suggests that this may be the handle from a Frankish tri…

A complete Iron Age cast copper alloy vessel mount in the form of a boar or pig, dating to c. 50 BC to 100 AD. The pig is small, squat and rounded in appearance, with an almost globular rear end, which has a slight suggestion of a curled tail. The back is slightly pointed, creating an unbalanced pointed oval cross section through the body, with the rounded belly contrasting with the pinched spine which is clearly present as a marked ridge. The spine slopes downwards sharply from its highest point to a distinct neck, before the object widens again at the pig's head, just behind two …

A cast copper alloy bull's head vessel or bucket mount dated to the late Iron Age / Early Roman period, about 300 BC - 300 AD. The figurative mount is in the form of a bovine (ox, cow or bull) head, with horns and a long nose. It is a rounded rectangle in cross section. The horns project from the upper corners of the mount. They taper to a blunt point and are slightly curved. At least two vertical lines are incised on the brow, perhaps representing a fringe of hair or a forelock, or a strip of binding. A copper alloy Early Medieval hooked escutcheon from a hanging bowl, probably dating from AD 500 - 700. The vessel is globular with an everted rim and flat base with low pedistal rim. Part of an Early Medieval hanging bowl dating from about AD 500 - 700. Part of the rim and upper half survives in several pieces, and two of the escutcheons and their attached annular loops. The curvature of the largest surviving piece suggests a rim diameter of about 200mm. The rim is made from sheet which curves inwards to form a wide concave gulley immediately below the rim, and is then slightly everted and thickened a little at the rim forming an angled top. The thickened part of the rim is about 2.6mm thick. About 60% of the rim survives, in four pieces. The wall of the ves…

An almost complete small fine ware vessel. Appearance seems to be a well-made vessel with a red slip coating on the outside with occasional inclusions of mica which is probably of Roman date. The rim of the object curves outwards and is chipped and worn in one place. Circumferential grooves from the wheel (wheel marks) are visible on the internal face of the vessel and on the vessel base which is uneven due to wear. The vessel is mid-orange in color and is in good condition. The rim, body and part of the base of the vessel is worn however overall there is not much wear.

The fabric appears to be a fairly hard fabric with few inclusions, occasional rounded stone (possibly iron stone, void only visible) and sparsely micaceous. Description: An incomplete lead alloy salt pan of Roman date. The object consists of two halves of a salt pan of flattened lead alloy each of which are rectangular in plan with a folded rectangular rim along two edges. The remaining two edges on each half appear to have been cut in what appears to be a deliberate way. A cast copper alloy vessel mount of Late Iron Age / early Roman date, circa AD 50 - 200. The vessel mount is formed from a flat piece of copper alloy; the object is convex on the upper face and flat on the reverse face.
