Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete cast copper-alloy coin weight of late Medieval date. The weight is hexagonal in plan with two flat faces and a sloped (bevelled) edge between the two so that the uppermost face, which carries a design, is slightly smaller than the plain underside face of the weight. the design is badly worn but appears to consist of a bust facing right with a single initial to either side. The initials are not clear. The weight is similar to other hexagonal weights in Withers, in 'Lions, Ships and Angels; Identifying Coin-Weights found in Britain', states that "Hexagonal weights are either…

A decorative cast copper alloy armorial roundel and frame. The armorial mount comprises a circular gilded copper alloy frame (external diameter 49.58mm, internal diameter 34.16mm) which holds a gilded and enamelled copper alloy roundel (diameter 36.36mm). Four copper alloy rivets project from the reverse of the frame probably to attach the mount to a leather strap - possibly a horse harness, sword belt or similar. One small iron rivet pierces the frame from the front through to the reverse, possibly as a later attempt to secure the roundel and frame. The roundel sits within the frame …

An unusual cast copper-alloy three-piece buckle consisting of the frame, plate and pin. The frame is annular with a rectangular sectioned circular frame. The front is decorated with incised letters. Corrosion and flaking gilding make them difficult to read, but they seem to form a blundered inscription rather than a readable legend. Complete cast copper alloy figurative mount of a woman of Medieval date. The mount, which is flat-backed, is in the shape of a female facing left with her left arm bent in front holding what is probably a child in a seated position with a now missing head. The woman is wearing a long gathered gown with a waist tie and a low slung purse to the front. The woman appears to be wearing a small head scarf which does not fully cover her hair which can be seen hanging slightly tousled down the woman's back. This lack of full head covering makes the figure unlikely to be that of the Virgin Mar…

A probable medieval forgery: a gilded silver copy of a gold quarter noble probably of Henry VI, 1st reign (1422 - 1461), possibly Leaf - Mascle issue (1434 - 1435). The coin is badly double struck on the reverse and patches of a darker metal are showing through where the gilding has worn away from the tops of the letters. The Obverse legend seems to be blundered and the gilding causes the details to be indistinct. See North 1473 probably.

A gilded copper-alloy pointed-oval seal matrix. The matrix is in very fine condition save for a few spots of iron corrosion. Only a small amount of gilding survives. John Cherry kindly studied the seal matrix and comments: The seal shows a half length figure of St Katherine, above a pointed arch with an arch above her head. There is a sun (or star) and moon to left and wheel to right. Beneath under an arch, from which rise two towers, is a praying figure possibly a priest or a member of a religious order. A medieval coin; a silver groat of Edward IV (1461 - 1470), Light coinage (1464 - 1470). This is a mule with a type Vd obverse and a type VI reverse. Muling between types V and VI is quite common. Type Vd is the commonest variety of type V obverse and can be identified by the letter P having a very long foot and the letter A being slightly bow-legged. However, this example appears to have an E on the breast, which indicates that it is a rare variety of Vd/VI mule, struck from an obverse die intended for the York mint (E standing for Eboracum). Stewartby explains that in 1464/5 there w…
