A complete cast copper alloy vesica seal matrix of medieval date. This is a personal seal and the the image in the centre of the matrix depicts a kneeling figure (probably the owner of the seal) praying in front of the standing St John the Baptist, with the pascal lamb (Agnus Dei) in the field between them. The inscription runs clockwise around the outer edge and appears to read 'S' PIS REGINALD LONDON[i] A P VII'. John Cherry suggests this could be read as 'The Seal of Prior Reginald of (or from) London'. Cherry comments that "the A might go with LONDONIA and the letter P might indic…

A decorative cast copper alloy armorial mount (roundel) and frame of later medieval or early post-medieval date. The mount comprises two elements; a gilded and enamelled copper alloy roundel, in this example decorated both sides, and a circular copper alloy frame 61mm in diameter. The roundel appears to have been reused; on the reverse is an incised heraldic shield with the blazon Checky sable(?) and vert (?). Due to the condition of the reverse it has not been possible to identify the arms. Around the shield is a wreath border, the three gaps formed between the border and shield ha…

An incomplete copper-alloy spout from a late medieval ewer. The three-dimensional piece takes the form of a bird with tubular body. The form of the bird is broadly that of an elongated 'S', although the back of the upper neck has a flattened appearance. Damage has occurred at the tail end, by which the spout would originally have been attached to the vessel. The legs, which flank the base of the spout, are incomplete; interestingly, however, one of the lower legs, with a three-toed claw, was found slotted into the base of the broken spout, the claw thus resembling a foreshortened t…

An Early Medieval to Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, wedge-shaped in profile. The fitting includes a fragment of an oval loop terminal. From this loop the object expands to a raised boss on one side. On the opposite end is one side of a bifurcating grip, whose decoration is probably intended to be zoomorphic. This is not pierced for attachment so any attachment point must have been on the missing side. The lower side of the fitting is flat.

A gilded copper alloy disc. The disc appears to be cut down from a larger object and a Great Square-headed Brooch has been suggested (by Julian Watters). The remaining decoration is far from clear but is reminiscent of Salin Style 1, perhaps late Style 1 (Chris Fern pers. comm.). It is possible that what is left was intended to be used as a weight, but this is only a suggestion.

An early-medieval copper-alloy styca from the Kingdom of Northumbria, dating to the 9th century AD and probably issued during the reign of Eanred (810-41). The coin shows two moneyers' names rather than king and moneyer, probably as a result of the mixing of dies. Both moneyers date to the same period. 'Obverse': HVAETRE (Hvaetred) 'Reverse': MONNE (Monne; retrograde). This is a die duplicate of Abramson 2012, Y1965-2 (p.27). Ref: T. An Early Medieval gilded copper alloy round-headed or equal-ended plate brooch. Both ends appear to be triangular and are decorated with faces. Most of the catchplate end is missing. Barrie Ager kindly comments: This is an example of an unusual equal-armed type with concave-sided, triangular arms, which has very few early Anglo-Saxon parallels as yet, although it is too early to be a continental ansate brooch. A 6th-century date does indeed seem likely on the basis of the Style I decoration. The type comes mainly from Kent, the Isle of Wight (IOW-A71E22) and Wessex and there is a v…

Early Medieval Irish harness mount, cast copper alloy with a gilded face bearing panels of reticulate interlace. The mount is cruciform, its four arms set around a central roundel. Each arm narrows before expanding to form a rectangular terminal. The central roundel is marked by a 20mm diameter ring which is raised above the level of the four arms. A similar raised band defines the edges of the arms. These frames are not gilded, but the gilding may have been lost from these areas.
