A worn and etched, sheet lead. Medieval pointed oval seal matrix trial piece. Description: On the front is an incised central motif of a star, surrounded by two parallel lines in an oval shape, between the lines is the inscription. The inscription reads "+S'R[O]BERT FIL'I ROGER". The lettering is mostly written upside down and forward so, if impressed wax would read incorrectly back to front. The one exception to this is the "R" for "ROGER", which is retrograde and thus would appear the correct way round. The lettering is still however placed in the order one would expect of a matr…

This object is of uncertain use and may be a gaming piece in view of the decoration. It may be an incomplete lead pendant weight of probable Medieval date (AD 1200-1550). The object has four roughly equal flattened "sides", each side tapering along its length from the broken hanging loop at the top to a maximum width of 15.79mm and then tapering back to its flattened point . The resulting shape is diamond shaped in end-on view. The upper end has the remains of a single oval perforation which would have formed the suspension loop. Two of the four "sides" have indistinct raised letterin…

A probable lead lid from a box of medieval date (c. AD 1300 - 1340). The object is a circular lead disc with a stamped design on one face depicting the arms of England (three lions passant guardant) surrounded by three palm branches. This is in turn surrounded by a collar which appears to contain foliate decoration and lettering, however, this is worn and indistinct. On the other side is a six petalled flower. The upper edge of the disc exhibits evidence of a relatively recent break, possibly indicating the position of a missing attachment tab or loop. A similar example with a lomb…

Small cast lead rectangular Viking weight dating from 800 to 1100 AD. The upper surface has been decorated with a thin openwork copper-alloy plate; gilding survives in the grooves of the decoration. The design is unclear, but may represent two interlacing animals, perhaps birds seen in profile. A long neck ending in a head with round eye and long beak appears to extend from a body with a D-shaped wing decorated with two oblique grooves. A second long neck or body may cross over the first, and also end in a beak. There is a large roundel between the two beaks, apparently a space-fillin…

Late Anglo-Saxon brooch made from cast lead. The face bears a motif consisting of a triqueta, its three arms made up of two raised lines their ends terminating in pairs of opposed scrolls surrounding pellets. In the centre of the disc is a single pellet and, around its edge, is a ring of pellets. The brooch is crushed and no trace of remains of the pin and clip. On the back of the brooch is a series of scratches which could, with the eye of faith, be interpreted as the stern of a ship, with two steering oars a mast and a yard.

Lead strap end. The decorative scheme follows that usually seen on ninth century 'Trewhiddle Style' strap ends, with a curved line below the bifurcation which is now missing. Below this is a rectangular panel containing a devolved animal motif. Lower end truncated but the two crescentic ears belonging to the animal head terminal are present. On one edge are five transverse cut lines. The back is uneven and covered with small, shallow indentations. The decoration appears to have been cut, rather than cast.
