Oolitic Limestone stone shot. Pecked stone ball of a size apt to be fired by the smaller version of the Minion, which was one of the smaller guns mounted on wheeled carriages to support troops in the field. Stone shot was an early projectile derived from the similar balls made to be lobbed by catapult artillery. It would later be superseded by cast iron shot. Stone shot was used during the Wars of the Roses (c.1450-1489) along with other projectiles, and by the armies of Henry VIII (1509-1547) and Elizabeth I (1558-1603) – though the English ships which assailed the Great Spani…

A jetton, of probable post-Medieval origin. It appears to be decorated with a lamb and flag. It has a mid grey-green patina (90%), and a light grey-green patina (10%). It has later been given two holes, which would suggest it was re-used as a button. However, as these two holes are not central to the jetton, it would suggest that it is incomplete, and the original full-sized jetton would have been much bigger. Dimensions: Remaining diameter (max): 22mm. Thickness, 1mm. The holes: Diameter (larger), 4mm. Diameter (smaller), 3mm. Weight: 1.75g.

Silver coin. Worn penny of Charles I (1625-1649), with a central piercing executed from the obverse obliterating the face of the monarch. This act was clearly not intended to display the likeness of His Sacred Majesty, and its destruction may rather have been intended, perhaps as a political statement. As pierced coins of the period found their way into hoards it cannot be asserted that the piercing demonetised the coin – and indeed, any propagandist benefit would have depended on its continued circulation. Obverse description: bust left, I behind head. Reverse descriptio…

It is copper-alloy, likely a late post-Medieval pilgrim badge, although it could be simply a religious attachment for a horse's bridle/saddle. It has a dark green-grey patina. It is very similar to other such examples from the 18th-19th century, often bought as a souvenir after visiting Rome. Copper-alloy badges tend to date in general from the mid-15th century (Spencer 1998, 12). It depicts Jesus being hanging after crucifixion, with two female figures at the base of the cross. The two females likely represent Mary Magdalene, and Mary, mother of James & Joseph. The figures a…
