An abraded rim sherd of Neolithic grooved ware of Clacton Style, probably from a flat-based jar or bowl. The fabric is dark brown in colour with small angular flint and iron inclusions. The exterior is decorated with triangular panels filled with pressed dots and an incised line around the rim. The interior surface has three circumferential ridges. The original rim diameter was possibly around 150mm.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fine-grained Limestone saddle quern. A neat sub-rectangular block of stepped wedge-shaped profile, worn on its upper surface with a flat base which is indented only at its thicker end. The form is Neolithic, and a saddle quern would be used with a separate cobble grinding stone to grind corn to a coarse flour, and hence marks the advent of arable farming in the area whence it was reported. The small size and flat base – the latter perhaps suggesting use on a flat surface or even a table, which would be a remarkable feature to postulate in a Neolithic settlement – are perhap…

Incomplete tiny leaf-shaped arrowhead, of Green, H. S. (1980) type 4 A, of slightly lighter patinated dark grey flint, the very tip of the base of this point is broken transversely. The dorsal face is very finely and invasively pressure flaked so some of the flake scars overlap at the centre of this face, the ventral face is hardly worked at all, just a few pressure fakes to form the point, this is probably due to the natural curvature of a struck flake; only flakes need to be removed from the curved parts as an arrowhead must be straight in profile to fly in a straight path, the …

A complete Neolithic finely worked polished stone axehead. It is an elongated sub-triangular shape and oval in cross-section, with straight slightly outwards curving sides, a narrow, rounded butt and a blade end that curves outwards only very slightly. It is composed of a coarse-grained basic intrusive rock that has probably undergone metamorphism, speckled white and blue-grey in colour. There is a patch of orange-brown straining on one face. It survives in good condition with only a small amount of damage to the butt end. Dr Emily Banfield (pers. com.) kindly comments …

A complete, flint, leaf arrowhead of early Neolithic date. Green (1980) Type 3Bn. c.4000BC-3300BC. The object is sub-triangular, the dorsal face is slightly convex with covering parallel low angle retouch and short sub-parallel low angle retouch around all the edges. The ventral surface is slightly convex near the point then becomes slightly concave towards the proximal end due to a negative scar and percussion ripples. Reference: Green, H.S., 1980. Arrowhead rough-out, a tertiary semi-soft hammer struck flake has been modified by invasive pressure flaking to form the general outline of a leaf shaped arrowhead, one side (the ventral face has been flaked to a much greater degree than the dorsal with removals from all edges towards the centre, the middle “blank” area is the original surface of the struck flake that the flakes haven’t been able to reach. Asymmetrical laurel leaf point or knife, made from a thick, elongated primary of secondary flake of off-white patinated flint with patches of rusty iron oxide stains to both faces. The ventral face is largely unaltered from its fairly flat bulbar surface, a few flake scars around the periphery are evident, one has been struck quite deeply to one side of the “point”. The dorsal face has the most flake scars; struck towards the centreline with the straighter of the two lateral edges being the more invasive and lower angled, this probably is the main cutting edge, the more cur…

The tool has been polished into an elongated sub-triangular shape with an oval cross-section at the butt and a slightly more lenticular cross-section at the cutting edge. The axehead tapers with slightly convex sides from the narrow rounded butt, (measuring 13.4mm wide by 12.6mm thick), to the curved cutting edge. A probable Neolithic stone axehead roughout of Neolithic date, c.4000-2500 BC. The object is in the early stages of shaping, with scars from large removals on both faces and does not appear to be a flake but rather a rock in the process of being shaped. The bifacial object is broadly sub-oval in plan, with an irregular lozenge section. The shaping has not progressed to a point where it is possible to discern a blade or butt end, though one end is more pointed that the other, which has a flat, angled end formed by excess material ending in a hinged fracture on one face. One face of the …

The flint is a mottled mid- to light grey-brown with limited surface patination and some very limited orange staining in places. Covering, low angle retouch on both faces, which appears to have been struck with a soft hammer, removing all traces of the original blank flake.  'Laurel leaves' appear to have been used as knives, perhaps with the addition of a wooden handle, as their asymmetrical f…

The fragment comprises most of the cutting edge, which is curved and a portion of one side which has a slightly flattened and facetted edge. There appears to be no evidence of use-related wear or damage. The axehead is made from a grey-green fine-grained siliceous tuff or greenstone, with fine orange-brown streaks / banding. The lithological source is probably from the vicinity of Langdale, Cumbria. This material is exotic for the location of the find (south Oxfordshire), suggesting that the axehead would have…

A complete polished hardstone axehead of Neolithic date. The axehead is 123.6mm in length and 61.3mm wide, with a lenticular side profile and an oval cross section 37mm thick. The butt is rounded and the sides flare slightly towards the blade end before narrowing into the curved cutting edge. One face demonstrates damage from weathering, whilst the other side remains smooth with visible striations from polishing. This suggests that the axehead has spent considerable time partially buried in riverbed sediment with only one face exposed to the moving water. The axehead is made from…
