A silver early-medieval penny of Cnut the Great (1016-135) mint: London, moneyer: Leofwold. Type: N 790 (Short Cross)
Obverse description: Crowned bust right. Obverse inscription: Illegible/worn. Reverse description: Short cross. Reverse inscription: LEOFPOLD ON LV.
The reverse of the coin has nine 'peck marks' across it, where the surface of the coin has been lifted up by cutting with a knife- this was undertaken to check that the coin was produced from good silver and was not a plated copy or of poor quality.
