An incomplete, slightly worn and bent late 10th-century early-medieval silver penny of Aethelred II (978-1016), 'Crux' type, uncertain moneyer and mint (c. 991 - 997 AD; North 770). This coin has been cut down to the inner circle, in some places following the line in varying levels of neatness, in others going beyond the line. The purpose of such reduction is uncertain, although not an isolated occurance (see 'Notes', below).

A silver early medieval coin; a penny of Aethelred II (978 - 1016), First Hand type (979 - 985). The coin is damaged and parts are missing, and what survives is in two pieces. About half of the edge is missing, making the mint and moneyer impossible to identify. The coin is 18.8mm long, 15.7mm wide and 0.6mm thick. It weighs 0.63g. For reference see North number 766, (Figure 1).
