Fragment of a silver penny, probably of Eadgar's reformed portrait type, moneyer Ealstan or Aelfstan of uncertain mint, weight 1.22g, c.972-5. The remains of an iron strip are attached to the obverse, demonstrating that this coin was once fixed to something else. As an artefact (as opposed to a coin) of greater than 300 years age it thus qualifies as Treasure

A probably modern imitation lead alloy coin in the form of an Early Medieval silver coin. The piece appears to be inspired by a coin of Eadgar (959 - 975), Pre-reform two line type (959 - 973). It is very similar to North number 741, but the moneyer's name is 'NORB/ER' which is not one of the listed possibilities. The finder has had the piece tested using XRF and it is made of a high lead alloy. The crosses in the design seem thinner and cruder than the illustrated genuine coins. The piece is 22.63mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 3.9g.

A silver penny of King Edgar, moneyer Grind, struck at Lincoln circa AD 973. The type is Edgar's 'Reform Portait' coinage. Ref: J.J. North, no. 752. The obverse appears to be from the same die as an example recorded on the Early Medieval Coin Corpus, no. 1004.0777, part of the Royal Collection, Copenhagen. The type is well known, and the moneyer Grind is known at Lincoln from the following two reigns as well, but the Copenhagen coin is the only recorded example of a coin in his name from Edgar's reform type (c. 973-75). However, it is possible that there may be other examples from Sca…

A silver penny of Edgar, early portrait, Bust Crowned type, c.959-973 AD. Part of one side of the coin is missing due to old breaks. This is by an East Anglian moneyer whose name might be reconstructed as 'Svartinc'. Dr. Martin Allen (pers. comm.) notes that this appears to be a new moneyer for Edgar's reign, but that a similar coin in the British Museum reading 'SAYDINC' may be the same moneyer. See North, 1980: no. 750.

An Early Medieval silver coin; a penny of Eadgar (959 - 975), reform coinage (973 - 975). The coin is severely damaged with all the outer edge of the flan missing except for one letter of the legend. It is currently 16.1mm across, but would have had a diameter of about 18mm. It weighs 0.77g. Apart from the damage, the coin is hardly worn and is in very good condition. There is a small raised mark next to the cross pattee on the reverse which may be the result of a flawed die. These coins were minted at a large number of mints. Normally the moneyer and mint would be recorded on the reve…
