Silver coin. Penny of Aethelred II (978-1016), Canterbury mint issue of Leofstan, 1003-1009, as kindly identified by the finder, in excellent condition. The find spot, in the vicinity of a Viking encampment, is possibly significant, given the fresh condition of coin when lost. Obverse description: Helmeted cuirassed and shielded bust left. A late early-medieval silver penny of Aethelred II (978-1016). Long cross type (North 774) dating to 997-1003. Minted by Godman at London. North (1994, 159). The coin has been broken and is in two unequal parts, the smaller simply consisting of a proportion of the circumference beyond the inner circle. At various cracks there are some small losses at the circumference. It measures 19.6mm in diameter, 0.6mm in thickness and weighs 1.11g (a total of both parts).
