Diameter: 19.62mm, Weight: 3.3g RRC 306/1  The figure of Mars and the apex on the reverse together recall the fact that the moneyer's father, Cos. 131, held the office of Flamen Martialis (an office probably held at the time of this issue by the Albinus of Cicero, Brutus 135, but later to be held by the Consul of 100).

A Roman Republican silver chariot denarius coin of the moneyers C. Gargonius, Ogulnius and M. Vergilius, dating from c.86BC and minted in Rome.  The obverse shows the head of Apollo wearing a laurel wreath, although abrasion has resulted in the loss of much of the original detail of the head. There is some decoration on the outside edge of the obverse, but no detail is apparent and most of it has worn away.  The reverse depicts the four horse chariot, with some decorative detail on and near the outside edge, but this is now worn away.  The coin is …

A silver plated contemporary copy of a Roman republican period denarius serratus dating to the 1st century BC (Reece period 1), possibly an issue of L. Papius (79 BC). The obverse has a small bust facing right, possibly Juno Sospita clad in goats skin; the reverse is entirely lost to corrosion. The rim of the flan has a series of incised grooves. Mint of Rome. Cf.
