Copper alloy button. Discoid plano-convex maritime uniform button of composite construction retaining a drawn wire loop now pressed against the back. The front bears the motif of a crowned anchor and cable flanked by letters R R in a Gothic script. The motif is bordered by a plain inner order and a cabled outer edge. Cast concavo-convex naturalistically modelled mask of a maned lion with luxuriant tresses and ‘beard’ arranged in a sub-rectangular form to frame jowels, nose and brows projecting in strongly moulded relief. Extensive gilding traces appear on the display side. Two drilled holes of diameter 6mm appear at either end of the mouth, with a further blind pit behind the nose. Cast spherical one-piece animal bell, larger than usual, with opposed blowholes – though of the usual size – in its upper hemisphere and two larger opposed oval sounding holes linked by a sounding slot across the lower hemisphere, probably with a wider moulded border round it. A relatively small rectangular loop projects from the top. A medial rib marks the meeting of the hemispheres. Abraded. Copper alloy possible finger ring. Cast D-section band, slightly narrowed at one point which, if indeed a finger ring, would be opposite the bezel. The latter, and the rest of the band, is plain. Abraded. The wearing of finger rings was a men’s custom for the Romans, and this band would have to be for a youth or gracile individual if indeed worn on the finger.
