An incomplete Roman cast copper alloy headstud brooch dating to c.AD 75-200. The wings are semi-circular in cross-section and rectilinear in form. The wing cap on one side is decorated with incised linear lines, the parallel decoration on the other end is worn and not visible. The reverse of the wings has a central notch for the missing pin. The bow springs out the wings; it is D-shaped in cross-section and has an accentuated curved bow that is flat on the side, narrowing to a flattened foot. The object exhibits a rectangular head measuring 15.4 mm in length, 14 mm in width and 2.87 mm in thickness. The bird sits with its wings at rest and head facing forward. The eyes of the bird are shallow circular drilled holes and it has a recessed gently curved beak. The head of the pin is decorated with two incised grooves crossing one another to form an X pattern. The pin has a medium green patina. A fragment of a copper-alloy Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) strap end of Thomas Class E, Type 1 dating to the period c. AD 1000 - 1100. It would have comprised of an open-work design, but all that remains is the attachment end. The attachment plate retains three entrally positioned rivet holes.
