This is one of the 'two-colour' type tiles; inlaid decoration of white clay, then glazed with a clear lead glaze gives the tile a two-tone effect producing a yellow and brown coloured tile. The front surface is decorated with a blue on white design with a tin glaze. The design comprises three tulips from a central stem with tendrils within a scalloped border with a foliate corner pattern. Approximately one third of the tile is broken and missing. There are patches of glaze remaining on the sides and traces of mortar on the reverse. The tile has a buff-pink fabric with red grog inclusions. Roy Stephenson notes the style of the painted decoration indicates it is London Delftware and the thickness of the tile points to a date in the second half of the 17th century. The small fragment would have been part of a hypocaust tile, used for the construction of the Roman heating system. It has been made from an iron-rich fabric with well-mixed quartz temper and has been highly fired to produce a hard tile resistant to thermal shock. The reverse has been roller stamped with a geometric pattern before firing, using a wooden roller with a carved pattern. This pattern of alternately raised and recessed chevrons was intended to allow effective adhesion of the tile with mortar. Some traces of the Roman mortar remain in the recessions of the surface. The find consists of a corner fragment from a large Roman brick, probably a lydion or a pedalis. The tile has been made using an iron-rich clay heavily tempered with grog and quartz; the fabric has not been mixed evenly and these tempers gather in large striations. The fabric also contains a large number of air bubbles. The front surface of the brick has been decorated with a swirling pattern that was incised by the maker with a fingernail whilst the clay was still plastic. Such marks made pre-firing are usually known as signature marks, but they tend to be a small hemisphere or symbol, and restricted to one area of the brick. This decoration seems to cover the entire surface of the brick, and therefore is more likely to be a kind of graffiti than a signature mark. On the reverse of the brick, along with the two edges of the find where the sides of the object remain intact, a large amount of Roman mortar remains in situ. This mortar is a pale buff-brown colour with large gritty inclusions. Dimensions: length: 136.0mm; width: 199.0mm; thickness: 36.0mm; weight: 1415.0g. The finder’s grid reference is given as SE 914 911, but the find-spot is described as 1 mile west of Ings Farm, Kirton in Lindsey. This would suggest the intended NGR to be SE 914 991. Similar examples within the Museum of London collections depict natural scenes of animals and birds stood on grass. This tile has a similarly natural scene, of which only the back legs of an animal remain. This is enclosed within a circular border of blue, white and purple (manganese) concentric rings against a white background with five blue lozenge-shaped petals in the corner outlined in a darker blue. The tile is decorated with a two-colour design for a repeating single tile pattern. At the centre of the tile a white slip fleur de lis is present on a dark ground. It is enclosed in a diamond defined by further white slip which divides the tile into four diagonal sections. The tile has two pairs of symmetrical semi-circular decoration in the corners marked out in white slip. The exact pattern is difficult to make out because of where the tile has broken, and the post-deposition discolouration of the surface. The pattern appears to be similar to that illustrated in Eames (1980) ref. 2232, catalogue examples of which were produced at Penn. Penn, in Buckinghamshire, was a major centre of tile mass-production during the 14th century (Eames 1980, 221). This tile formed one element from a patterned pavement where adjacent tiles would have completed the semi-circular motifs to form circles with central floral patterns. All are of a fairly coarse oxidised orange to red fabric, some pieces with a reduced greyish core. The fabric is sandy with occasional calcareous inclusions, voids and other stone pieces (up to 10 mm). Three of the fragments are from the corners of the box-shaped tiles. All the fragments have patterns of combed or rolled parallel lines (five to seven at a time and each groove from 3 to 4 mm wide) applied in angular arrangements and often overlapping. The thickness of the tiles is variable ranging from 13.5 mm to 28 mm. Such tiles were used to create flues in the walls of building, through which hot air generated by the hypocaust system would pass.
