Roman gold finger-ring. The hoop consists of a flattened ribbed strip which expands to openwork triangular shoulders decorated with inturned peltas flanking a central serrated rib topped by a pellet. The shoulders support an oval box setting with remains of a pinkish coloured substance, probably adhesive for a gem which is now missing. The ring is rather squashed. Discussion: although no exact parallel can be cited, a similar ring with openwork shoulders was found at the Roman fort of Vechten in the Netherlands (Henkel 1913, no. 251). The ring is of Guiraud type 3 E/F. Date: c. …

A Roman tiny gold finger-ring, probably for a child, with D-shaped hoop, simple shoulders and an expanded flat oval bezel. Soldered to the bezel is a low-relief schematic phallus comprising a plain circular-sectioned wire with a pair of flanking basal granules. For a very similar gold ring with soldered phallus on the bezel, from Faversham, Kent, in the British Museum collections (AF 425) see C. Johns The Jewellery of Roman Britain (UCL press, London, 1996) page 12, Fig. 1.3. In Roman imagery the erect phallus was a common and powerful apotropaic device to avert the Evil Eye and…

Gold strip bracelet fragment with square-end terminal, bent, distorted, and broken at the other end. One side is plain and undecorated, although faint impressions of the outer side decoration remain. The decorated side has a raised outer border, and a plain raised central line which divides the bracelet into two decorative zones. Each of these contains two rows of cable decoration in tight, neat rows, which was made using an 'S' shaped punch (this is only clear under magnification). At the end which is most damaged, there is heavy wear, inclduing nicks and striations which probably oc…

Roman gold finger-ring, rather damaged and distorted. The filigree hoop is circular in profile and section, is narrow at the bottom and swells slightly to the shoulders. The bezel comprises a circular box setting, now rather damaged and missing its original stone or glass setting, which has a pair of small gold spheres on each side where the bezel meets the shoulders. In addition to the damage to the bezel, the hoop is broken on one of the shoulders. There is a good parallel in the Thetford treasure, although the ring in question is composed of a beaded wire hoop and retains its setti…

Roman gold finger-ring, much bent and distorted but intact. The hoop consists of a flat strip of sheet-metal, faceted, that widens to triangular shoulders and a flat bezel. The bezel is set with a circular box setting with smaller 'satellite' settings on each corner, only one of which is undamaged. These were presumably originally set, but all the settings are now missing. The main circular setting has been shown by scientific analysis to have had a silver-alloy setting, now much degraded.
