Silver gilt pilgrim badge. A circular plate bearing the framed image of the Virgin and Child, the Virgin crowned and with sceptre and the Child haloed, viewed against a cross-hatched ground within a cabled inner border, a gutter, and an outer frame which is externally lined. A probably integrally cast D-section bar passes behind the image and across its flat plain back and is broken at the site of a sharp curve. Gilded overall, chipped. The finder kindly offers the suggestion that the object was a pendant, but the image is designed to be viewed when the bar is horizontal. This feature …

Incomplete silver gilt pilgrim badge. This object has a flat reverse and moulded, domed front. James Robinson comments that it depicts St George on horseback advancing right. The saint’s arm appears to be raised; he probably originally wielded a sword or lance. The horse stands on the recumbent figure of the dragon. The stitching loop is missing from the reverse. This would have been used to attach the item to a hat or other garment. The gilt is mostly worn off to front and back. A similar style badge, though portraying a standing saint, can be seen in The Treasure Annual Report…

Description: Well-preserved gilded silver openwork pilgrim badge depicting St Margaret and the dragon. The saint is wearing a flat-topped crown, below which her hair frames her face; the face has no detail except for a nose. She wears a vertically ribbed garment and holds a book in her left hand and a cross in her right (so the book is on the viewer's right and the cross is on the viewer's left). The book appears to have a clasp on one edge. The cross's shaft is thrust into the open mouth of the dragon, whose belly-up body curves round below to form the edge of the badge; M…

An incomplete silver-gilt badge depicting St. George on horseback, galloping right. The badge, which is of openwork design, has well-moulded details on its upper surface, and a flat reverse. The horse is largely complete, the one exception being at the front end, where only the tops of the forearms survive. Tarnishing of these breaks indicates that the damage occurred in antiquity. The horse's hindquarters are bent in a way that suggests rapid forward motion; this impression is further enhanced by the position of the tail, which curves upwards. An uneven surface on the base of the …
