Object type: POT BOILER
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of fire-cracked stone or possible 'pot boiler' of unknown exact date. The fragment is roughly pyramidal in shape with a thick and two thinner layers of quartzite between a hard, reddish, fine-grained stone. The thick quartzite layer shows clear cracking caused by heat.  It is possible this stone was used in the heating of large quantities of water or was in the formation of a hearth. The stone has been found in an area with lithic implements and ceramic vessels dating to the Mesolithic to Medieval periods, thus a similar date has been applied.  The o…

A fragment of stone or lead ore (galena), probably from a lead mining operation of uncertain date, Roman to Medieval, AD 43 - 1600. It is from an area where there was Roman lead mining, but it could also have been extracted at a later date. It is hard and fine grained, dark grey in patches on the surface, and light grey in other areas. There are small angular clear quartz inclusions embedded in the matrix. The sample is 47.4mm long; 29.3mm wide and 21mm thick. It weighs 101.05g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A group of 6 Hearth stones of probable Iron Age to Medieval date (400 BC-AD 1800). The stones are sub-ovate, with cracking and pitting resulting in the partial loss of portions of some of the stones. The stones each have a fire blackened side. The stones are composed of metamorphic stone with a high quartz content. This sort of material is impossible to date without scientific analysis, and there is occupation evidence in this area from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Medieval and Post Medieval to modern period. Given that the stones were recovered from t…

A possible worn piece of a quartz and mica rich sandstone whetstone of probable Post Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1700 - 1900. The stone is rounded at both ends and is oval in section. There are worn facets along the sides. The regular shape of this stone suggests that it is part of a manufactured hone or scythe stone. When in use, a scythe would have needed sharpening every 15 minutes or so, so hones were vital pieces of equipment for every farm worker.  Measurements are; length 88.8mm, width 33.5mm, thickness 19.5mm and weight 84.17g.

An incomplete stone perforated battleaxe of probable very late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date (2500-1800 BC). Probably belonging to Roe Group 1, early form. Only about 50% of the axe has survived but it is finely. It is broadly sub-triangular / wedge shaped with gentle concave sides, expanding towards the cutting edge with a flared crescentic edge. The cutting edge has a small, probably more recent, chip. In profile the axe is broadly sub-rectangular. The perforation is now semi-circular due to an old break, with the patina matching the body of the axe. The but…

A complete polished hardstone axehead of Neolithic date. The axehead is 123.6mm in length and 61.3mm wide, with a lenticular side profile and an oval cross section 37mm thick. The butt is rounded and the sides flare slightly towards the blade end before narrowing into the curved cutting edge. One face demonstrates damage from weathering, whilst the other side remains smooth with visible striations from polishing. This suggests that the axehead has spent considerable time partially buried in riverbed sediment with only one face exposed to the moving water. The axehead is made from…

A fragment of puddingstone probably representing a fragment of an Iron Age or early Roman puddingstone quern.  Only a small chunk, bearing breaks on all faces, survives. Puddingstone is distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Research carried out by Major in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary querns were produced here from at least 10 AD until around 160 AD and a similar chronology seems likely in Cambridgeshire (2004, 2-4). The fragment is 63.8mm long, 4…

It is sub-D shape in cross-section with uneven surfaces, rounded edges and corners, and is very worn. The underside is flat with a pitted surface and widespread scratching. The breaks each side are uneven and have the same wear as the other surfaces. The object measures 223mm in external diameter, 60mm maximum thickness and weighs 1882 grams.
