4 fragments of a puddingstone quern of probable Roman date. Puddingstone is distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Research carried out by Major (2004, 2-4) in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary querns were produced here from at least 10 AD until around 160 AD and a similar chronology seems likely in Cambridgeshire. 1, Length: 34.14mm; width: 23.61mm; weight: 14.24g  2. A complete Neolithic finely worked polished stone axehead. It is an elongated sub-triangular shape and oval in cross-section, with straight slightly outwards curving sides, a narrow, rounded butt and a blade end that curves outwards only very slightly. It is composed of a coarse-grained basic intrusive rock that has probably undergone metamorphism, speckled white and blue-grey in colour. There is a patch of orange-brown straining on one face. It survives in good condition with only a small amount of damage to the butt end. Dr Emily Banfield (pers. com.) kindly comments …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone whetstone possibly of Bronze Age date. The whetstone is made from a fine-grained grey stone. It is rectangular-sectioned with with worn broadly rounded terminals. The piece is heavily worn.   It is extremely difficult to date whetstones accurately without any supporting contextual evidence. This object was found in an area of known Bronze Age activity, a similar date therefore cannot be ruled out.

A perforated stone implement of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is sub-ovoid in shape with one rounded end and one narrower, angular end. There is a cylindrical perforation situated behind the narrower end, c.31mm in diameter. There are linear marks on both faces and around the wider end indicative of impact during use. It is made from a fine grained, light yellow, sedimentary stone. The precise function of these objects is debated, although they are frequently described as 'mace heads'. Dating is also uncertain. Although traditionally thought to …

An incomplete Neolithic greenstone axehead dating to circa 4000-2350 BC. It is pointed oval in section. It flares outwards from the butt end to the crescentic cutting edge. The butt has some iron staining on it. The surface is singificantly weathered and rolled, with the original polished surface now having eroded. It is formed of greenstone, an igneous rock which found throughout the south west of England. has been subjected to low grade metamorphism, which is found throughout the south west of England. A complete Early Bronze Age stone arm guard (bracer) dating to circa 2300-2100 BC. Broadly rectangular in plan in section it has polished bevelled edges. At either end are located central circular drilled apertures to enable fixing to the arm. The faces of the stone have been smoothed. One end is slightly wider than the other. Broadly linear striations on both faces are the result of the bow having snapped-back during firing. A very similar armguard was recovered from the Stonehenge Archer burial assemblage, radiocarbon dated to circa 2300 BC (Heath 2012: 122-123) whilst two were…

It is a small section, trapezoidal in shape, of a much larger flat, disc-shaped quernstone, although it is not clear whether it is the upper or lower stone. The outer grinding surface has been dressed with pecking, while the other face is roughly dressed. The fragment is roughly rectangular in cross-section, but the original shape, circumference and the form of the central hole are all unclear due to its fragmentary condition. Two fragments of rotary quernstones of probable Roman date. The larger fragment was found initially and the smaller one discovered close by on a subsequent visit. Both finds comprise small sections of larger disc-shaped quernstones, each featuring part of the original curved outer edges. The stone from which they are formed appears to be volcanic. The larger fragment has parallel, diagonal grooves across one face, while both faces of the smaller fragment are smooth, suggesting that they are not part of the same object. A mostly complete puddingstone 'beehive' type quern dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 1-160 AD. Ground from a grey conglomerate with large orange, pinkish and black flint inclusions, the quern has suffered some minor losses to its edge though is otherwise preserved in reasonable condition. It is broadly circular in plan and domed, with angled sides that give it a 'beehive' like appearance.
