Stone rubber or polisher. A fine-grained Sandstone chunk, possibly half of an originally cylindrical object, with smooth curved sides and flat top with one groove near its edge. The other two adjacent flat sides are both slightly ridged or grooved in the same direction, with about four ridges or grooves passing across that face which preserves these details best. In its present form, the object sits well in the hand if either of the flat faces are used. The improvised use of rubbers and sharpeners and polishers extends from Prehistory, through the Roman period and into the Early Mediev…

4 fragments of a puddingstone quern of probable Roman date. Puddingstone is distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Research carried out by Major (2004, 2-4) in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary querns were produced here from at least 10 AD until around 160 AD and a similar chronology seems likely in Cambridgeshire. 1, Length: 34.14mm; width: 23.61mm; weight: 14.24g  2. A stone possible gaming piece of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The object is formed from a very smooth circular pebble, identified by the finder as Cornish greenstone. The pebble has two shallowly convex faces and rounded sides. It would have functioned well as a counter or gaming piece. It may have been naturally formed but collected for use as a playing piece. Measurements are; diameter 24.3mm, thickness 7.5mm and weight 6.74g. The stone is dark brown, fine grained and smooth, but with a slightly pitted surface under magnification. There appears to be a high quartz content.…

A small fragment of a smashed stone object made from a fine-grained micaceous metamorphic rock (which is not of local origin to the findspot). One face is smooth and clearly well finished. It has incised lines forming a zig-zag pattern, which may be partial angular letter forms in Roman captials with thin stems and small serifs. The individual letters cannot be identified but the general style could suggest a potential Roman date for the object.  Aside from the inscribed face, all other sides of the piece are broken, with heavily abraded breaks which are clearly of ancie…

Sandstone quern fragment. A sub-triangular chunk of fine grained red-buff Sandstone, possibly reused as a sharpening stone. The overall form includes a short [40mm] extent of a curved edge, and an aris where two flat surfaces meet at an acute angle opposite the curved side; the intervening surface is flat and probably lightly dished by wear, the fourth large side is broken. These characteristics could point to this being a fragment of a rotary quern of estimated original diameter 260mm. The Romano-British period also saw the use of a wide range of sharpening and polishing stones, which…

A broken part from an oval Roman finger-ring intaglio formed from red stone, possibly carnelian.  Approximately half of the intaglio survives, with the upper surface bearing an inscribed design.  This appears to be the lower half of the original motif, and shows a standing figure, possibly winged, leaning on what may be a column. Next to this on the left side as viewed is the lower part of what may represent a branched tree.  The lower surface of the intaglio tapers to a plain flat surface, which bears traces of possible adhesive from the original mounting.  The obj…
