A small and incomplete whetstone made from an imported micaceous schist and of suspected early medieval to medieval date. The whetstone was originally rectangular and narrow, with a sub rectangular cross section. Only one end now survives, this has a rounded terminal drilled with a large suspension hole. The main body of the object has been thinned to breakage by heavy use from one side.

Quartz plough pebble. About one half of an oval quartz pebble, worn to a flat surface across its putative middle with unidirectional fine scoring marks on the flat surface. Kevin Leahy identifies such objects as plough pebbles, considering they were driven into the mould board of a plough to reduce the erosion of the wood by the heavy wear incurred during the use of a plough, with unidirectional wear patterns arising from this setting. These were first identified in Scandinavia, and their British appearance may signal a minor technological introduction by the Vikings. Suggested date: E…

Limestone spindle whorl. Plain fat limestone disc with large hole, Walton Rogers form B. The source record alludes to a large hole which may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. The flat cylindrical form is common at Flixborough in a 8th-to-9th-century assemblage, and continues as a popular form into the medieval period. The mass may suggest this example could be used to spin a fine yarn. Stone whorls are much more common than lead when occupation deposits are hand-excavated. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1100 Diameter: 34.5mm, Thickness: 12.5mm, Weight: 18.9gms.

An incomplete hone or whetstone of Early-Medieval to Medieval date, c.AD 700-1400. The object is rectangular in plan and section, tapering in thickness from pierced end to a worn transverse break at the other. The wider end or top of the object is pierced with a circular perforation measuring 3.1mm in diameter. This appears to have been drilled from each face. Numerous irregular striations are visible on each face of the object. The stone is a hardstone which is black in colour and has no inclusions. The object is 34.9mm long, 19.9mm wide, 4.9mm thick and weighs 6g. It is likely…

An incomplete whetstone of probable early-medieval date (c. AD 800 - 1100). Description: The whetstone is formed from a very fine-grained, sedimentary, mica-rich stone with distinct bedding planes. It is sub-trapezoidal in plan with tapering sides and is rectangular in cross section. Both ends are broken, probably in antiquity, with the narrower end broken across the hole for the suspension cord. There is also some damage and loss to one of the wider faces and edge. All sides are flat and very smooth with one face showing a longitudinal thin groove scored across it…

Fragment of a large sub-rectangular sectioned whetstone, of fine-grained non micaceous mid grey stone with lighter, linier streaks throughout, both ends are broken, the surviving section appears to be the centre with all sides constricted from use wear, one only subtlety worn, one face has a prominent, rounded groove that runs down the length on the centre, this must have been wear from one specialised form of grinding or sharpening.

One half of a whetstone of fine-grained non micaceous mid-grey stone, perforated at one end by a drilled hole with a slightly “hourglass” cross section, this originally made the recorder think that this may have been a Beaker period stone wrist bracer with a single hole, further research has shown many of the whetstones from the Early Medieval/Medieval period had similar profiled perforations and is now much more likely to be of this later date and function. One lateral edge and the end with the perforation is ground to a thin, pointed edge, the opposing side is flat, almos…

Unidentified stone object of unknown date, but is probably a spindle whorl. The object has been made from a piece of very fine grained stone (possible siltstone or mudstone) and has been carefully shaped and into a sub-circular shape. At the centre is a circular perforation with an internal diameter of 5.2mm. The outer edges of the object have been deliberately smoothed. It is possible that this may have been used as a spindle whorl. Length: 34.4mm; width: 30.7mm; thickness: 7.3mm; weight: 11.19g.

‘Plough pebble’ made from a natural quartz on has been worn a worn, polished surface covered in fine striations. Dimensions: 22.8 x 21.3 x 21.2mm high, Mass 13.98g. Plough pebbles are an interesting phenomenon; finds from Denmark show them to have been used to armour the soles of a wooden ploughs to prevent premature wear. Holes were drilled into the wood into which hard stone pebbles were hammered, as the plough pas…

A sub rectangular, sandstone rock with ogham script inscribed down three of the four sides. The front and back sides are smooth. The rock is a dark grey colour and likely to be a shist type rock (metamorphic mudstone/shale). The incisions appear to have been done in a single action, not repeated. It measures 110 mm in length, 38 mm wide and 19 mm thick. It weighs 139 g. Katherine Forsyth (University of Glasgow) has confirmed that the markings are those of an ogham inscription. The script is that of an early style, most likely 5th to 6th Century but possibly as early as 4th Century. T…

Decorated spindle-whorl made from chalk, probably of middle or late early-medieval date. The base is approximately circular and 31mm in diameter; it is decorated with a crudely made groove around the central perforation. The angle between base and sides is rounded, and the steeply sloping sides are also slightly convex. They are decorated with a series of irregular grooves, mainly roughly vertical but also some more oblique and some slightly curved. These grooves do not quite reach the base. Where the top survives, they do not seem to reach this either, but most of the top is now miss…

The underside is undecorated and is smooth in appearance but has a slight grove across the middle of the whorl. The surface takes a brown colour. Ref : PUBLIC-D11069
