A Post Medieval – Modern stone whetstone (16th – 19th century). The whetstone has a D-shaped cross-section and there is a circular perforation just off-centre in the upper third of the object. Part of the flat long surface is missing and one end is damaged. There is no evidence of use-wear polishing but this may have been lost with the damage to the surface, or the object was never used. Dimensions: length: 195.46mm; width: 59.77mm; thickness: 31.16mm

Lead alloy (with some copper/bronze) weight or perhaps a gaming piece. It is circular in plan and has a rounded top. The decoration has been moulded and is on the upper (rounded) face only. The decoration is in the form of a stylised sun with rays emanating from a central circle. The bottom of the weight is smooth. Weights like this can date from the Iron Age period onwards and are very hard to date precisely. This weight probably dates to the Medieval period.

A conical lead weight from a stratified Roman site. The weight has a hole from the top going through to the base that varies in width and is off-centre. Originally this object was identified as a plumb-bob but the perforation is not central and the object would have swing unevenly, so it is suggested that this is not a plumb-bob but a weight possibly used in the weighing of goods.

A lead weight, cuboid in shape. The cube has a linear gash in one of its sides, perhaps a result of making the weight conform to a particular measurement. The other sides are unaltered apart from three which have very small circular indentations in the centre. The weight weighs 115 grams, the equivalent of 4.1 ounces. Each of the sides measures 24mm in length. Weights which do not bear any diagnostic features are difficult to date. However, given the relative precision of the weight it seems likely that it is post-medieval to modern in date.

A possible lead weight. The item is sub-circular in shape and irregularly convexed. It measures circa 26 mm in diameter and is 10 mm thick. A circular perforation (5.6 mm in diameter) passes through the artefact, presumably for supsension. There are no diagnostic features on this artefact which suggest a date.

A small weight made of lead. The weight is a tall cone shape. There is a hole in the base of the lead, which extends up the centre of the weight. Unfortunately, the length of this hollow was not ascertained, as the hole is full of soil and lead corrosion. The base of the weight is flat. The edges are rounded. The weight is undecorated. The surface of the weight is quite pitted. The lead has gone a light greyish-white colour. This weight is possibly medieval, but most probably post-medieval in date. Due to that fact that so few lead weights have been found in archaeological contexts, on…

A lead of weight of uncertain date and function. The weight is well made with a bulbous body and an integrally cast suspension loop. It may have served as a plumb bob, a fishing or net weight or a trade weight. Identifying the precise function of weights is extremely difficult when they are found out of context. It measures 54.41 mm in length, 21.57 mm wide and 19.16 mm thick. It weighs 78.5 grams.

Six sherds of samian ware pottery of early Roman date. Three are body sherds and three are rim sherds. Two of the rim sherds have external beads and one is plain. All the sherds are oxidised throughout with shiny brownish-orange slips. The fabric contains moderate very small limestone pieces and occasional voids, so the vessels were probably produced at one of the South Gaulish kilns. Total weight: 44g

A rim sherd of a Roman Samian Ware vessel. The rim is profile is a sub-‘n’ shape with the exterior of the rim leaning outwards slightly. The interior has a small horizontal cordon below the rim. In profile the wall of the vessel is only slightly convex on the exterior and concave on the interior. The broken edges of the sherd are quite fresh. It weighs 2.9g. The sherd is Samian Ware, suggesting the vessel is used as table ware rather than used for utilitarian purposes. The vessel was probably a bowl or dish. Samian Ware was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to mid 3rd cent…
