Record ID: HAMP-36DD77
Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A broadly circular lead plug/mend for the repair of a damaged vessel. An abraded sherd survives attached. It has a sandy orange fabric with red inclusions, including one large one. Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A circular lead spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is plano-convex and undecorated. The central perforation for the spindle is approximately 9.8 mm in diamater. It measures 32.06 mm in diameter, 9.5 mm thick and weighs 43.1 grams. It is plain and undecorated. As such objects were used for a wide period of time, from the Roman period through to the post-medieval, the dating for this plain example is uncertain.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two fragments of Roman tegula tiles. Both have part of the side and base which are at right angles and have lost the lower side of the base making the original thickness unclear. One has a straight side which tapers from 18.5mm at one end to 14.8mm at the other and is 16.5mm tall measured from the upper side of the base although the top is irregular and maybe broken. The other has a flat top which meets the straight outer side at a sharp 90 degree angle but on the inner side it is an even curve and curves inwards slightly before it joins the base. This side wall tapers in thickness fr…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post-medieval heart shaped token made from a lead alloy. Has a loop near the lobes of the heart shape to be used for hanging the token as a necklace or charm. The obverse of the token has raised capital letters "I" and "C" along with a line of raised dots around the perimeter of the token as well as two lines of the dots running down the center. The obverse is also slightly domed in the lobes of the heart shape, being thickest near the looped end of the token and becoming nearly flat towards the opposite end. The reverse of the token has what appears to be the raised letters of "iHS" …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy bird feeder dating from the late 15th to 18th centuries. The feeder is D-shaped in cross section and has a flared rim. The reverse is flat to enable the feeded to lay flush against another vertical surface, for example the sides of a bird cage. The bird feeder is undecorated apart from two parallel horizontal lines beneath the flared rim. There is some damage to the reverse. These objects would have been filled with water or seed and placed in the bird cage, with the flat back against the wall of the cage. Quite of number of these objects are found are all are very simila…

Object type: SHIELD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small lead-alloy square topped shield, divided into four unequal quarters. The shield has a cross-hatch design etched into the top left and bottom right quarters - there may be a design in the two remaining quarters but they are unclear. The function of this object is unclear, and suggestions range from a template for horse harness pendants, a cheaper version of such a pendant, a small servants badge, or possibly part of a child's toy. There does not appear to be any attachment fitting on the back, which is plain. The design and style of this little shield suggests that it dates fro…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy sub-circular bag or cloth seal. The seal retains both the front and back parts of the seal but the joining hinge is missing. The back disc is smaller than the front disc. The front disc is depicted with St George and the dragon (only part of the dragon is visible). This stamp shows it was approved by an alnager, a person who ensured that the right length of cloth was supplied in the bale before giving the bale the seal as a mark of approval so it could be sold on. The seal dates from the 17th century, until the alnager's post was abolished in 1699.

Two glass beads.  The beads are of a pale blue or aquamarine colour.  Both are slightly irregular in shape but are essentially sub-oval with flattened sides and a single central perforation.  It is often difficult to date beads accurately, especially if they are of very simple design.  These beads are therefore recorded as undated although are thought to be most probably of Modern date, AD.c.1750-1900 as the form is not typical of earlier periods. Both beads weigh 0.4g, the larger bead is 9.43mm long by 5.59mm thick by 4.79mm wide, the smaller bead is 8.85mm long by 6.34mm thic…

Fired clay with few inclusions but moderate voids; an oxidised fabric with reduced core. Two flat roof tile fragments, possibly kiln wasters. The larger tile shows complete dimensions of 280 x 173 x 12mm, and is slightly bowed. Evidence for suspension is lost. Its under-surface (as made) is heavily pitted, perhaps by use of an organic separator such as sawdust or by weathering between forming and firing while stored with the lower surface uppermost. The upper edges (as made) are lipped from removal of a wooden mould, and the upper surface bears prominent longitudinal striations fr…

A cast lead mount in the form of a stylised dolphin, or possibly a fish. The dolphin has an arched back and a tail which loops back on itself to meet with the arched back. Slight traces of black remain over parts of the mount.  It measures 52.24 mm long, 14.12 thick and 27.3 mm high. It weighs 88.2 grams. Two similar examples are recorded on the PAS database. One (NMS-23D975) is of copper-alloy, and has been identified as a drop handle from a Roman vessel. The other (LVP…

A lead of weight of uncertain date and function. The weight is well made with a bulbous body and an integrally cast suspension loop. It may have served as a plumb bob, a fishing or net weight or a trade weight. Identifying the precise function of weights is extremely difficult when they are found out of context.
