Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A moulded copper alloy double oval buckle frame, sometimes called a 'spectacle' buckle. There is a rosette design on the knops at the outer centre of each loop, with a lobed knop at either end of the strap bar. The buckle is slightly bent but otherwise is in good condition, although the pin is missing. The file marks visible on both sides of the buckle show where it was removed from the mould then finished off; these buckles were mass-produced in the 16th and 17th centuries.

A copper-alloy fragment from a gilded object of medieval date. The fragment is thin, flat and sub-circular in shape with a broken sub-rectangular protrusion at one point in the circumference (W.: 5.2mm). The upper surface is moulded in low relief, while the lower surface is flat. The moulding is broadly cruciform within a double border broken by travelling lines towards the circumference. Traces of gilt remain on the upper surface above the green patina. The patina has been lost on the majority of the fragment whose metal is now red-brown in colour.

A fragment of Roman box flue tile, which has a blue tinge on all sides due to exposure to heat. The largest external face marked with waved lines, before firing, for practical purposes. The corresponding internal face is plain, with one end raised to create the box nature of the tile (tile thickness 26.2mm, at raised end 34.7mm). The tile is coarseware, but the visible inclusions are less than 5mm², apart from one which is less than 10mm². There is rounding of the edges caused by wear while buried, as box tiles were designed to have clean edges to fit together better.

A moulded pewter zoomorphic head - either an eagle’s or a raven's head, possibly the handle-mount of a walking stick. The mount is well detailed, having feather detail around the eyes and partly over the beak, although stylistically, only the top half of the beak is represented. A necked circular hole on the underside is likely to have been the mounting point for a walking stick. The hole on the top of the head appears to be secondary, and is probably the reason for the mount's disposal. The object is hollow and weights 65.60gms and measures 72.81mm length, 41.88mm max width, 30.56mm…

An incomplete fired clay figurine of probable 18th or 19th century date. It has been suggested that the character portreyed here is possibly Struwwelpeter (Shaggy Peter), who first appeared in an 1845 children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. The figure depicted is that of a young male, who has sholder-length wavy hair, and wears a spotted waistcoat and a cravat. The left arm is angled at ninety degrees from the elbow, held across the body. To the left of the hand are four scratch marks, suggesting that the figure has scratched himself with his fingernails. The damaged chin also bears p…

Base sherd of a Roman Samian ware dish or shallow bowl, probably dating from the earlier Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-200. The sherd comes from the raised pointed centrepart of the dish with the central raised point still visible at one edge (see image). The inside is plain, but the outside shows remains of a personalised graffito which was less skillfully etched into the surface of the bowl. The sherd probably comes from a Samian bowl type Dragendorff 18/31 or 15/31, both of which are common dishes or shallow bowls and have this typical raised domeshaped base.

Rim sherd of a shallow Samian ware bowl or plate dating from the early Roman period, probably AD43-200. The fragment is very small and worn and it is difficult to ascertain which Samian form it came from. It seems like the outmost part of the rim was turned inwards rather than outwards which would be very unusual. However, alternatively it could be part of the wall of a bowl of Curle 11 or 38 or possibly a mortarium form Curle 21. All of these forms have a plain hooked flange down the outside wall and it is possible that the fragment was part of that.
