A ceramic rim sherd of a plain Samian Dragendorff type 15/17 platter. (c. AD 43-c. AD 96).
The sherd has a plain, almost upright rim, with an internal quarter-round moulding at the junction of the wall and the floor (the floor musing). The surface has been damaged in places, clearly marked where the slip is missing and the lighter fabric is revealed beneath.
This vessel is pre-Flavian and was probably made in Central Gaul at Les Martres-de-Veyre (Webster: 1996: 30, ref: 15/17A). This type of vessel occurred throughout the 1st century, but declined in popularity in the Flavian peri…

Circular amber coloured glass bead. Tool and grinding marks visible. 14mm in diameter. The hole is 2mm in diameter.

A lead repair for a pottery vessel. A fragment of the creamy pink pot remains in the seal. It is possibly medieval in date, although this is somewhat uncertain. The repair measures 31.25 mm in length, 17.71 mm wide, 9.56 mm thick and weighs 21.1 grams.

A Post Medieval pottery body sherd from a Frechen stoneware bottle- a Bartmann or “Bellarmine” dating to the 16th century. The sherd includes part of the applied oval portrait medallion showing a man’s profile facing left within a border comprising a ring of twisted rope and then scalloped drapery. The figure is wearing a neck ruff and a helmet. The fabric is grey with a brown salt glaze on the external surface.

A lead musket ball misshapen by impact and probably dating to the 17th century. Due to the shape of the musket ball identifying the original bore size is difficult, but the estimated diameter is c.13mm or half an inch, one of the smaller bore sizes used with a musket.
The musket ball measures 12.71mm diameter and weighs 17.3gms.

A lead powder measure and gun powder horn cap dating from the 17th century. The powder cap has two small loops (one of which is broken) to secure the cap to the powder holder. The powder cap is cast in two pieces and then soldered together.
The powder cap measures 21.93mm in diameter and is 13.66mm long. It weighs 14.2gms.

A Roman pottery rim sherd from a vessel, a Samian decorated bowl dating to the mid 1st – mid 2nd century. This bowl may be Dragendorff 30 or 37; it has an upright bead rim and vertical walls. There is a glossy dark red slip on both external and internal surfaces. The slip is slightly darker on the external surface. The fabric is typically red throughout with few mica inclusions. Fragment of copper-alloy dragonesque Romano-British brooch with inlaid red enamel.In native style with Roman influence. Fragment represents the 'body' of the brooch with extended 'neck' and 'tail' both lost. The fragment is decorated with a central circular cell recessed to a depth of approx 3mm and not containing any enamel and two adjacent cells with fragmented remains of red Champleve enameling.

A trio of fragments of fired clay brick of Roman date. All three are roughly quadrilateral in plan, some tending more towards a square shape than others. They appear to have been deliberately reduced in size to form regular shapes and have perhaps been reused as tesserae, albeit large, crude ones. One of the pieces is broken. Incomplete fragment of an irregular bi-conical glass bead of probable Roman date (50-300 AD). The bead is formed from a dark blue glass with a series of irregular bubble like inclusions in the matrix. The outer surface is much abraded with a series of flaws which may be original; it is a milky blue colour. Where the bead is broken a dark purple blue cvoloured glassy surface is exposed. A Post-medieval lead token, incomplete. The token has a sexfoil petal design on the reverse with a possible 'K' on the obverse, although the rest of the reverse design is illegible.
The token measures 21.92mm in diameter and is 3.33mm thick. It weighs 6.5gms and dates from the 16th-17th centuries.
