Fired clay with few inclusions but moderate voids; an oxidised fabric with reduced core. Two flat roof tile fragments, possibly kiln wasters. The larger tile shows complete dimensions of 280 x 173 x 12mm, and is slightly bowed. Evidence for suspension is lost. Its under-surface (as made) is heavily pitted, perhaps by use of an organic separator such as sawdust or by weathering between forming and firing while stored with the lower surface uppermost. The upper edges (as made) are lipped from removal of a wooden mould, and the upper surface bears prominent longitudinal striations fr…

A fragment of Roman box flue tile, which has a blue tinge on all sides due to exposure to heat. The largest external face marked with waved lines, before firing, for practical purposes. The corresponding internal face is plain, with one end raised to create the box nature of the tile (tile thickness 26.2mm, at raised end 34.7mm). The tile is coarseware, but the visible inclusions are less than 5mm², apart from one which is less than 10mm². There is rounding of the edges caused by wear while buried, as box tiles were designed to have clean edges to fit together better.

A ceramic fragment, possibly from a roof tile dating from the Roman to the modern periods. In profile, the fragment is a very gently S shaped, with a pronounced flange on one side at the top. All of the edges are broken except the flanged edge, which is straight. The fabric is brown/orange with large grains of grit. The fragment is 85.5mm long, 74.8mm wide, and 22.1mm thick excluding the flange. The fragment has a mass of 137.8g. Roman roof tiles (tegulae) have flanges but are essentially flat rather than curved (e.g. see de la Bedoyere, 1989, p.111) but the incomplete nature of t…

Fragment of roman flue tile with combed decoration. The tile has old breaks on three edges. It is made of a sandy fabric with some shell inclusions. One side is decorated with rough combing in two angles. The fragment is 98.6mm long, 96.3mm wide, 21.8mm thick and weighs 2.53 grams. Only a small part of the relief pattern on the tile can be seen, it includes two sets of parallel lines covering adjacent square areas and running at 45 degrees to each other. In line with the general dating suggested for relief patterened tiles given in Betts, Black and Gower (1997:51-2) it is dated from t…
