A Roman copper alloy langton down brooch. These were produced during the initial phase of the Roman occupation of Britain (43 - 75 A.D.) (Hattatt, 1989; 29). As Hattatt states (1982; 80) they are "typified by a low flat receeded bow without a foot knob, and the spring obscured by a cover" and this describes the main points of the brooch well. The brooch is an example of a Class B Langton down brooch and it's appearance is strikingly similar to number 39 in Hattatt, 1983; 81. This was dated to about 25 - 50 A.D and like this example has an incised line at each wing end, reeding that …

An example of a Colchester brooch. It is cast as one peice of copper alloy. The brooch is incomplete - the pin, most of the catchplate and some of the spring is missing. The peice is undecorated and the wings are slightly bent out of shape and small. This would perhaps suggest that the original size of the spring was also small. The form of the bow conforms with Hattatt's description of a typical British Colchester brooch. The bow is d - shaped in profile and has one continuous arc curving inwards at the foot. The Bow is also round but seems to have been flattened on the anterior an…

An example of the Colchester derivative. It is almost complete apart from the axis bar, pin or the spring. Unfortunately there is a bend in the bow of the brooch, but otherwise it is in good condition. The wings are quite wide, presumably to cover the spring, and on part of the bow, where the wings are separated there is a rib running down from where the chord is kept in place. At the foot there is a small raised knob. Originally the brooch would have been gilted.

A fairly plain example of the Nauheim Derivitive La Tene III style of brooch. It has a four coil spring, a plain catchplate but does not have the flat bow and instead is rounded. It is slightly angled to the fore however. The bow is also narrow, very curved and tapers to a narrow foot. There is an example in Hattatt (1985, 25; 243) which is almost identical to this brooch. This type of brooch dates to the early 1st century B.C into the 1st Century A.D.

A fragment of a Roman trumpet brooch. The fragment consists of the trumpet head, upper bow and acanthus leaf moulding, with circumferential moulding above. The stump of a head loop is visible on the head of the brooch. On the reverse, hidden behind the trumpet head, there is a tubular arrangement encasing an axis bar, with an opening to accommodate the pin. There is an unusual arrangement for a trumpet brooch. The fragment measures 25mm in length; the head has a width of 12mm.
