Two glass beads.  The beads are of a pale blue or aquamarine colour.  Both are slightly irregular in shape but are essentially sub-oval with flattened sides and a single central perforation.  It is often difficult to date beads accurately, especially if they are of very simple design.  These beads are therefore recorded as undated although are thought to be most probably of Modern date, AD.c.1750-1900 as the form is not typical of earlier periods. Incomplete fragment of an irregular bi-conical glass bead of probable Roman date (50-300 AD). The bead is formed from a dark blue glass with a series of irregular bubble like inclusions in the matrix. The outer surface is much abraded with a series of flaws which may be original; it is a milky blue colour. Where the bead is broken a dark purple blue cvoloured glassy surface is exposed. Blue opaque glass diamond-faceted bead of uncertain date. It is 8mm long and 5mm in diameter. It is rectangular with facetted corners at each end. There is a central cylindrical hole running the length of the bead. It is possibly Roman or Early Medieval in date but it is impossible to be certain when found as a stray find. Guido’s book on Anglo-Saxon beads (1999, 50-51) says they could be Roman but some are also found in 6th century (and later) graves.

Two small fragments of an early Post-Medieval glass vessel, probably dating to the 16th or 17th century. A rim shard and body shard. The glass appears to be fairly colourless, but with an oxidised outer surface. The outer surface is decorated with thin, raised circumferential bands, arranged close to one another. A complete glass bead of possible Roman or Early Medieval date (AD 43 – AD 1066). The bead is translucent and bright mid to dark blue. It has convex sides with flattened ends and could be described as being oblate in form. The surface has fine pits over it which may be due to abrasion, and there are slight concentric striations which may be the result of a marving process. A worn blue-coloured glass fragment from the base of a Roman bottle. The fragment is of irregular form and is pitted, but two arcs from moulded concentric circles can be seen on one face. As Cool and Price (1995, 187) note, 'the pattern of two concentric circles on small square bottles is common in Roman Britain'. While the fragmentary nature of this item allows for more circles, making an assumption that there were only two allows for a basal width of around 40-50mm on the basis of comparisons with illustrated examples (ibid., 195-197). A Roman glass annular bead. The bead measures 26 mm in diameter and has a central perforation of 8.5 mm in diameter. It is 15 mm thick. The glass is of a very dark opaque blue, almost black in colour and has further coloured glass applied as decoration. This decoration consists of four unequally spaced ‘eyes’ of concentric rings, with a white glass outer ring and a deep blue inner ring.
