A broadly circular lead plug/mend for the repair of a damaged vessel. An abraded sherd survives attached. It has a sandy orange fabric with red inclusions, including one large one. This is undiagnostic (Roman to post-medieval) although a medieval date seems plausible. The lead has a shiny surface and now has is an off-white colour.

A trio of fragments of fired clay brick of Roman date. All three are roughly quadrilateral in plan, some tending more towards a square shape than others. They appear to have been deliberately reduced in size to form regular shapes and have perhaps been reused as tesserae, albeit large, crude ones. One of the pieces is broken. All three have a grey core while the outer surfaces (one is missing on the broken piece) has an oxidised light orange colour; one also has an oxidised side face. The fabric features occasional quartz inclusions and minerals giving characteristic marbled cream b…

A worn and corroded lead-alloy vessel repair, with fragments of the pottery surviving. The mend is a rough lozenge shape, very thick with the a linear notch around the size, with pieces of coarseware pottery still attached. One side of the mend is much thicker than the other. These types of mend were used within both the Roman and medieval periods; the extant pottery is not diagnostic.

A sub-oval lead plug/mend for the repair of a damaged vessel. The larger element is flat; the smaller one above the groove is slightly convex. The larger element extends beyond the groove in one direction. In the absence of any diagnostic pottery surviving within the groove the mend is difficult to date. However, given the large number of Roman finds made in the vicinity such a date is suggested.

A copper-alloy fragment from a gilded object of medieval date. The fragment is thin, flat and sub-circular in shape with a broken sub-rectangular protrusion at one point in the circumference (W.: 5.2mm). The upper surface is moulded in low relief, while the lower surface is flat. The moulding is broadly cruciform within a double border broken by travelling lines towards the circumference. Traces of gilt remain on the upper surface above the green patina. The patina has been lost on the majority of the fragment whose metal is now red-brown in colour.

A fragment of Roman box flue tile, which has a blue tinge on all sides due to exposure to heat. The largest external face marked with waved lines, before firing, for practical purposes. The corresponding internal face is plain, with one end raised to create the box nature of the tile (tile thickness 26.2mm, at raised end 34.7mm). The tile is coarseware, but the visible inclusions are less than 5mm², apart from one which is less than 10mm². There is rounding of the edges caused by wear while buried, as box tiles were designed to have clean edges to fit together better.

An irregularly shaped fragment of coarse grey Roman earthenware. The fabric is sandy and extremely micaceous, with foreign looking inclusions. There is one small area of a red-brown colour where the grey outer coating has been worn away. It is suggested that this is a fragment from an amphora, the distinct type of which is unclear.

A worn blue-coloured glass fragment from the base of a Roman bottle. The fragment is of irregular form and is pitted, but two arcs from moulded concentric circles can be seen on one face. As Cool and Price (1995, 187) note, 'the pattern of two concentric circles on small square bottles is common in Roman Britain'. While the fragmentary nature of this item allows for more circles, making an assumption that there were only two allows for a basal width of around 40-50mm on the basis of comparisons with illustrated examples (ibid., 195-197). On date, Cool and Price (ibid., 184) note: '.…

A large worn, irregularly drop-shaped lead plug for the repair of a damaged vessel. The plug has a groove where it was fitted to the wall of the broken vessel. The visible face is slightly concave. Such plugs were in use from at least the Roman period until the post-medieval period, and without the presence of a diagnostic pottery sherd are almost impossible to date closely.

A spherical object presumably of hard-fired clay. The object seems to have been made in a mould due to the presence of a regular median band (W.: c. 9.5mm). This object is of cream coloured clay, although other similar objects found in the county (not recorded on this database) all of the same proportions tend to come in a range of colours. This artefact is probably post-medieval in date and may have had any function from a net weight to a projectile.
