Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is made from a single sheet of metal which has been rolled into a tube. Both ends are broken and worn and the central join no longer meets. The object is similar in form to a key stem however an insufficient proportion remains to make a firm identification possible. This lack of any diagnostic features and the loss of patination make it impossible to identify or date this object any more closely. The metal is a light greyish-brown colour and is very worn. The object is 37.9mm long, 15.3mm in diameter and we…

Object type: PLATE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy plate with sheet rivet repair of medieval date. The plate is sub-rectangular but has been folded back on itself unevenly. The sheet has a repair in the form of a rivet which is lozenge shape in form and has been folded in on itself towards the centre before being folded back to hold it in place. Rivets such as this are generally believed to have been used in the repair of vessels. The sheet to which this repair is attached is however un-diagnostic. The metal is a dark brownish-yellow colour and is worn. The rivet is 25.9mm long, 26.4mm wide, 6mm thick and weighs 5.1g.

A copper-alloy open-frame brooch of Medieval (probably 13th to 14th century) date. The circular frame is of unusual construction, the upper and lower faces having been cast separately and joined around the perimeter. This join has come apart, revealing a hollow core containing evidence of solder. Within the concave underside of the upper half of the brooch is an attachment consisting of a transverse plate and projecting rivet; this attachment, which is located opposite the pin constriction (see below), would presumably have fitted into an opposing attachment (now missing) w…

A copper-alloy plate from a Medieval (probably 13th to 14th century) single-loop buckle. The plate has been cast in one piece and bent around the now-missing axis bar of the frame. The upper side of the plate is sub-rectangular in plan, having slightly concave long sides. Apart from a single groove around the perimeter, the upper surface is undecorated. Five domed-head rivets survive in-situ, one being roughly central, the other four arranged in two pairs, one of which is located towards each end. The rivets secure the upper plate to the slightly smaller back plate, with a …

A copper alloy hinge probably dating from the Medieval period. Sheet copper alloy that has been folded on two, the sides of the folded end are narrowed creating a knop on the forward edge. This would act as the male section of the hinge. Single rivet in the rear of plate. A similar but plain hinge was found in 14th or 15th century deposits at Bedern in York. Object type: DIE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crudely made lead-alloy die of uncertain date. The numbers are designated with punched pits in the usual fashion. The layout of the numbers is 'irregular', that is opposite faces do not total seven. The sides are numbered 1/5, 2/3, 4/6. The use of lead, the irregular shape and arrangement of dots all suggest it was locally made and therefore hard to date precisely. It could be Roman, although a medieval date cannot be ruled out. Egan (1997, 1) notes that dice with irregular arrangements seem to be most common between the 13th and 16th centuries. This die has developed a white…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy sheet rivet of medieval date. The rivet is sub-rectangular in form and has been folded in on itself towards the centre before being folded back. The rivet would have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. The metal is a mid brownish-yellow colour and is worn with patches of corrosion over its surface. The rivet is 16mm long, 10.6mm wide, 1.4mm thick and weighs 0.6g. Vessel repairs such as this have been found on sheet metal vessels dating from the early 12th to late 15th/mid 16th century. A similar example can be seen in: HAMP-9C8243 and in Egan, p.101, fig 87a.

County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy and enamelled Iron Age stud (150 BC - AD 43). The object is conical, hollow and has convex sides. Three low swellings on the sides are evenly spaced and there is a large nipple on the apex. Red enamel, surviving as irregular patches, probably enclosed the swellings to the base of the nipple. It is possible that the nipple was not enamelled. The base of the object has a maximum thickness of 3.0mm and a minimum thickness of 1.6mm. On the inside, slightly off-centre of the apex, there is an incomplete integral iron spike, circular in cross-section which has a maximu…
