Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete flint scraper of possibly Neolithic date (3450-2100 BC). The object is sub oval in plan and plano-convex in section. The flatter, ventral, surface shows evidence of the point of percussion and shows concentric ripples across its surface but may have been damaged some time after being worked as there is a significant scar across this face. The rounded distal (lower) end shows retouch on the dorsal side and margins. The lithic retains some cortex on the dorsal surface and is therefore a secondary flake.
The flint is dark grey in colour, corte…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete struck / knapped quartzite unifacial triangular pick of Lower and / or Middle Palaeolithic dating (c. 800, 000 BC to c. 40,000 BC).
The pick exhibits working on the interior (upper) face, concentrated around the tip but no working has been done to the exterior (lower) side; therefore it is a pick and not a biface (Graf, A., 2004, 84). Approximately 20% of the surface has been worked, with the original surface or cortex covering the remaining 80% of the surface.
The pick has a curved oval butt with a triangular tip. Where the he dark grey/brown cortex has been knap…

Object type: SCULPTURE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Newcastle upon Tyne
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worked stone of the Roman period, dating from the 2nd-3rd centuries.
The stone depicts a probably female head in the Romano-British style, with a head on a neck in relief on a rectangular base. There is no background panel behind the head, with the upper figural portion being sub-triangular in shape with a flat(ish) front face and a gently sloping reverse. The face is relatively flat with eyes and nose in low relief on a U-shaped head in very stark relief. Damage below the nose has removed the mouth to the jaw. The stone has weathered, but there is some evidence for defined ears t…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Stone, Volcanic Tufa (non-specialist identification by MF) polished axehead. One end of a polished stone axe, broken short of its mid-point with a large chip spalled from the break in antiquity. Of oval section with a well-preserved cutting edge which bears two small chips. Though the colour is now brown overall this is probably staining from the sandy local soil. Small chips of recent damage reveal a grey-green colour suggesting this to be a Group 6 axe from Langdale Pike, Cumbria. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of worked black geological material (jet, shale, canal coal, anthracite, etc). Possibly a Roman torus of unknown function. Mass: 10.7g; diameter (cross section): 18.3mm. The fragment is curved in plan and circular in section, with a break at both ends. Other than the broken ends, the object has a smooth surface, with three incisions near to the outer edge at one end. The object is broadly similar to incomplete tori included in “Roman Wight”, Tomalin, 1987, and assumed to be Roman by analogy with a similar object found at Silchester (Lawson 1976, 256-8). If this objec…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible scraper made from Greensand Chert dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age. The chert is orange in colour and, although the evidence for retouch around the edge is not conclusive, this type of stone is not native to the area in which it was found. It is likely that this is a crude scraper. The object measures 48.08mm x 41.58mm x 11.16mm and weighs 26.12g.

Paleolithic handaxe of greyish-brown Greensand chert with a deep, brownish-red patch on one face (A). It is likely to originate from the western part of the Blackdown Hills. It is of even grained, good quality material. The area around the probable findspot consists of Triassic sandstones overlain in places by a thin Head derived from the Quantocks to the North. The soils are sandy with many small slate, grit and quartz fragments. The handaxe has a lustrous surface weathered to a rich toffee-brown colour. There is a light mottled whitish patina on the lower face (B). The flake ridges o…
