Post medieval countermarked copper alloy penny of George III dating to 1806 to 1807, probably reused between 1806 and 1853. Spink 3780. The coin is worn and has been countermarked on the obverse with the letters S[Q?]UANCE diagonally across the bust. This is presumably a business name although it is not listed by Scott (1975). He (ibid, 6-11) suggests such countermarked cons were every common in the period 1790 to 1850: with legislation to ban the practice only coming out in 1853, and with some re-use of demonetarised coins after 1859 (ibid 13).

A heavily worn Post-Medieval milled silver sixpence sized coin consistent with sixpences between AD 1674 and AD 1787. This coin has lost all its original detail due to smoothing or polishing with one side being countermarked and has a slight 's' shaped profile. The counter marks on the central edge are 'P' and a 'cross patee', with a further countermark of a 'D' at the bottom of the coin stamped at 180 degree angle to the other marks. There are also deep scratches to the coin, two sets on the countermarked side and one on the reverse, potentially to check that the coin was complete…

A coin hoard of four copper alloy cartwheel pennies of George III, Birmingham mint second issue, dated 1797 (Spink p.417 no.3777). Probably a chance purse loss. One penny has been deliberately bent in two places and drilled through. As this modified coin was found in a group with other pennies, suggested to be a purse loss, it can be inferred that, despite the modification, the coin would still have been an accepted item of tender. All Diameter 35.5mm; die axis 6; total weight 99g. 1. Cartwheel penny Obverse: Bust. Inscription: GEORGIUS III D G REX Reverse: Britannia se…

Two Post-Medieval silver shillings of George III, dated to AD 1816 and 1818 respectively. London mint. Spink no. 3790. 1. Date: 1816, Diameter 23.7mm; weight 5.23g. 2. Date: 1818, Diameter 23.6mm; weight 5.31g. Since the coins were not over 300 years old at the time of finding they do not qualify for consideration as potential treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996, and instead fall under pre-1996 Treasure Trove laws, in the opinion of the British Museum's curators, the coins do not have to be reported as potential Treasure (pers. comm. 08/03/2018).

Post Medieval silver plated copper alloy counterfeit 8 reales of Charles IV of Spain, dated on the coin to 1794 and probably produced in the 1790s or ealy 1800's. Possibly an example of a 'Birmingham' forgery although the date is not in initial lists produced of these forgeries and it may be a later plated forgery made in Birmingham or elsewhere. The Birmingham forgeries are a very narrowly defined class of counterfeits produced with the possible "assistance" of the English Government beginning in 1796. They were initially made as part of a failed wartime attempt to destabilize the…

Post Medieval French silver 1/16 ecu (5 sols) of Louis XIIII dating to c. AD 1700-1715. Mint unclear. The coin has been pierced at 1 o'clock on the obverse, 5 o'clock on the reverse with a circular hole drilled from the obverse near the edge. Tt is bent over so the obverse is convex and the reverse concave; the current diameter is therefore less than that of the original coin.
