A milled silver sixpence of Elizabeth I, with gilt surfaces and two folds. Third issue coin, made 1560 - 1566. Star mintmark. Diameter: 25.5mm; thickness: 0.8mm; weight: 2.83g. The gilding of this coin is likely to have been an attempt to pass it off as one of the higher value, gold, coins such as the crown, which was of similar size and appearance. The regularity of the folding suggests it was probably done deliberately, perhaps to further disguise the real identity of the coin by, for example, obscuring the rose located to the right of the obverse bust.
