An incomplete Neolithic greenstone axehead dating to circa 4000-2350 BC. It is pointed oval in section. It flares outwards from the butt end to the crescentic cutting edge. The butt has some iron staining on it. The surface is singificantly weathered and rolled, with the original polished surface now having eroded. It is formed of greenstone, an igneous rock which found throughout the south west of England. has been subjected to low grade metamorphism, which is found throughout the south west of England. There are clusters around Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Land's End peninsula. Gi…

A complete Early Bronze Age stone arm guard (bracer) dating to circa 2300-2100 BC. Broadly rectangular in plan in section it has polished bevelled edges. At either end are located central circular drilled apertures to enable fixing to the arm. The faces of the stone have been smoothed. One end is slightly wider than the other. Broadly linear striations on both faces are the result of the bow having snapped-back during firing. A very similar armguard was recovered from the Stonehenge Archer burial assemblage, radiocarbon dated to circa 2300 BC (Heath 2012: 122-123) whilst two were…

An incomplete stone Roman quernstone dating to circa AD 43-410. The surviving element is around half of the lower stone. The stone is sandstone. It is a flat quernstone. It is straight sided with a now convex but now uneven based. The grinding surface is flat and heavily worn. The spindle hole is circular in plan with steep, oblique sides. The spindle hole is completely perforated and is 45mm in diameter. Shaffrey notes that flat quernstones came to be in use in southern England during the 1st century AD and are predominantly worked from sandstone (2021). Diameter: 400mm; Th…

An incomplete Post Medieval bone knife handle dating to circa AD 1600-1800. The handle is rectangular in plan and section with straight edges. The butt end has been rounded. Its surface has been polished. The handle has come away at the attachment end revealing the natural oval shaped cavity in the centre of the been which would have been utilised to house the blade. A worked cylindrical-sectioned transverse groove runs across the flanks surrounding the natural cavity. The handle is consistent with the Post Medieval Sheffield manufacture of knives and cutlery instruments. Simila…

A complete Neolithic flint flaked and polished axehead dating to circa 4000-2200 BC. It is broadly oval in plan and pointed oval in section. It tapers towards the butt-end. The butt has been straightened by flaking at an oblique angle. Both faces have multiple scaled flaking scars which are visible in the lower half of the axehead. The flaking is broadly parallel. The upper half of the axe towards the cutting end has been polished on both sides and the cutting end is still fairly sharp. There is a break in the corner of the cutting edge which was probably accidental. A small amount …

Stone axe, of pointed form with an oval cross-section, of Clough and Cummins (1988), petrological group XVIII, made from a cobble of green/grey quartz dolerite little bigger than the finished axe, original surfaces with a rough texture and with light brown surfaces are extant to the sides, the modified surface appear to be ground only, there is no evidence of pecking to achieve the final shape, this type of stone responds quickly to grinding. The cutting edge is heavily damaged, it has possibly been re-used as a hammer, though this is difficult to say for sure, the very tip of th…

A pebble mace head of the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period, dating to 10.000 BC - 2500 BC. It consists of an oval pebble with a slightly pointed oval cross-section, which has been perforated in the centre; the hole has circular edges on both faces and tapers towards the core of the stone with a hourglass-shaped cross-section. The precise use of these object is uncertain but are frequently referred to as mace heads or ceremonial sceptre. They do seem to relate to the less esoteric and more clearly defined polished mace and axeheads dating to the Mesolithic or Neolithic from whic…

A fragment of a rotary quern of probable Roman date. Made from medium to fine grain sandstone with evidence of fine inclusions. The fragment is part of the lower half of the quern and does not extend to the middle hole, so the dimensions of the entire stone are uncertain. The quern stone is flat on the lower side with a convex rounded edge with the lower facebeing wider than the inner side. The upper surface has a groove of approximately 40mm wide extending to the outer edge, presumably to allow the flow of ground flour. The surviving edge is dressed. It is 150mm long, and a maximu…

An incomplete knapped and polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. The butt and midsection are missing in an oblique patinated break, with only the lower body and cutting edge preserved extant. Deep negative flaking on both sides of the axe close to this break suggests this may have resulted from use. Demonstrating a rectangular section and slightly expanding flat sides, the axe has been manufactured on a piece of greyish flint which has now in places patinated to an off-white mottled with blue. Considerable iron staining on both faces marks the location…

The blade section is symmetrical (BS10), the cutting edge curved, symmetrical (ES04), and the butt rounded in plan and pointed in profile (BU10). An incomplete polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. It survives relatively intact despite some damage to the cutting edge and extensive breakage to the butt, the latter possibly relating to hafting and subsequent use. In form, it demonstrates characteristic gently expanding sides with a broadly lenticular section, that transition into a convex cutting edge. Manufactured on a fine-grained piece of mottled light greyish flint, the surfaces of the axe are completely smooth and polished-with all removal scars and primary reduction negatives obliterated. L…

A mostly complete puddingstone 'beehive' type quern dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 1-160 AD. Ground from a grey conglomerate with large orange, pinkish and black flint inclusions, the quern has suffered some minor losses to its edge though is otherwise preserved in reasonable condition. It is broadly circular in plan and domed, with angled sides that give it a 'beehive' like appearance. It demonstrates a central circular aperture, though this is now clogged at its upper edge with a large broken flint nodule which has apparently been jammed in the aperture- wheth…

An incomplete fragment originating from a Quernstone of late Iron Age or Roman date, c. 1-160 AD. The grinding face of the fragment is smooth and slightly concave, while the upper section is highly irregular due to breakage. It has been manufactured from puddingstone, a distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Preserved in fairly fresh condition, it survives to a length of 88.47mm, 50.38mm thick, and weighs 364g. Research carried out by Major in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary q…

An incomplete Neolithic flint axehead. It is elongated with straight sides and rounded ends, the cutting end wider than the butt end. Both faces are convex and covered with small flaking scars. The surface around these scars has been highly polished and they are positioned at different levels to one another, suggesting that most are original features of the object rather than accidental damage. Inwards curving notches have been removed on one face just behind the butt end from either side, perhaps to aid hafting. There is some damage to one side of the cutting edge. The flint is milky…

These are still visible in several places, although their upper edges and the surface surrounding them has been polished. A small amount of pebble cortex survives in the centre of each face. A fragment of a Neolithic flint polished axehead. It is roughly rectangular in shape and plano-convex in cross section. The outer face has small flaking scars in several places, but the area surrounding these has been smoothly polished, producing an almost flat surface. There is a rough, stepped break to one end, presumably the result of the impact that fractured the flake from the rest of the axe. The reverse face is covered with multiple scaled flaking scars running in different directions - possibly representing an attempt to sharpen the edges for re-use. The flint is a light, opaq…
