Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked ground and polished axehead, of a black hue, of probable Bronze Age date. Found with items possibly of the Bronze Age period, but its dating in relation to these finds could not be verified, as it was an historical find, once part of the Zennor Wayside museum's collections, and so, its exact geospatial provenance is unknown. The axehead is rectangular in shape with a ground flat bladed edge. The sides have been ground and polished flat and smooth. It appears a lot of effort has been applied in the production of this tool. The end has been rounded o…

An incomplete worked stone or rubbing stone or 'muller' of unknown date, but probable prehistoric, given its findspot context. It is likely constructed from a fine-grained granite. The fragment is trapezoidal in plan. On one side it has been ground flat with a slight indentation, and the other side has been ground in a convex shape. The complete end has been rounded and shaped smooth which follow the lines of the sides. The broken edge appears to have been worked, so as to smooth out the damage. A relatively worn blade end of a greenstone adzehead, of probable late Neolithic - early Bronze Age date, made from weathered greenstone meta-gabbro. Greenstones axe or adze heads were commonplace during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods in Cornwall.  'Greenstone' is actually a general archaeological term, rather than meaning a specific stone. It is commonly used to refer to any green-hued minerals that were used during the Prehistoric, to make tools, jewellery etc... To make matters even more complicated, various antiquarian literature in Cornwall calls this…

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible quern fragment, likely from the base. It looks to be made from a pitted greenstone. Due to its findspot context, it is likely to be Iron Age in dating, although secure dating is impossible, given its fragmentary state, but it is likely to be of prehistoric-Iron Age dates. It still has evidence of a grinding surface, and the curvature around the edge of the grinding surface (where this surface meets the edge of the stone) suggests that when intact, the entire object was circular in shape. Using this curvature to estimate the overall diameter of the grinding surface, it wo…

An incomplete, undecorated, stone spindle whorl probably dating to the medieval period (c. AD 410-1500). The spindle whorl is circular in plan. The object has a central circular perforation which has been drilled from each side. The object is made of a light rough stone possibly a micaceous sandstone. The object has been split in two, diagonally along one circular face, creating a triangular cross-section when viewed from one edge. As a result of the split one circular face of the spindle whorl is much lighter in colour that the other as it has exposed the inner material, su…

A complete bevelled pebble with probable hammer use wear of Mesolithic date. The tool is oval in cross section and tapers slightly from one end to the other. It is bevelled at one end and shows use wear consistent with hammering at the other. Bevelled pebbles are fairly common finds on later Mesolithic sites, particularly along the coast. They are commonly interpreted as being used in the processing of seal skins. This particular tool has been used as a hammer in addition to the bevelled edge, and may have been carried inland for this purpose.

The butt end of the axehead is formed and has survived and the blade end has been damaged through use and resharpened. The axe is also slightly waisted along its length showing wear from being bound to a wooden haft. Since deposition the axehead has been struck by the plough which has left several gashes to the surface on the ventral face, while the dorsal face remains unfinished and retains the original surface of the cobble that it was derived from. The surface of the axehead is pitted where the gabbro has weathered and rotted out of the axehead from lying in groundwater since deposition. The axehead has been utilised and then disposed of. A flake (39 x 25 mm) has come off the ventral face of the blade end during use but the butt end is missing a section (26 x 12 mm) from the dorsal face which has been struck and has broken off since deposition.
