Stone rubber. A water-rolled pebble with abundant black flecks to diameter 3mm, with one flattened sub-triangular surface. The object is of a size to fit snugly in the hand and may have been used for a grinding or polishing task using the flat face. The use of a probable Glacial Erratic for such purposes might be ascribed to Prehistory, or indeed any time up to the Viking Age, when the international supply of stone for specialist purposes was revived. A fragment of stone, possibly a fragment of a quern, of Roman to medieval date, (c.43 AD - 1500 AD). Description: The fragment is broadly triangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The longer, curved edge of the triangle shape suggests the outer edge of a quern stone, though this edge is very rough. The other edges are broken. One face is worked. On the worked face, there is a dished indentation whose curved edge is parallel to the line of the curved outer edge. An elongated whetstone, of sub-square section with both ends either broken or left unworked from the natural piece of slightly banded schist stone this was ground from, all four sides appear to have been used to sharpen knives, sickles etc. and are quite smooth to the touch.
