Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete Medieval cast tin alloy buckle, c.AD 1250-1500. This is a single-looped, D-shaped buckle with a scooped reverse face. There are no notches on the frame or strap bar where the pin would have sat. The frame is damaged with pieces missing and edged with old breaks. There is no evidence that the frame has a core of copper alloy that was tinned, suggesting an older Medieval date of this buckle. There is no decoration on any face of the frame.

Even though this is a more modern find, it is a highly decorated pewter, or possibly silver-plated cigarette case, with a floral motif. Each outer face of the case is decorated with foliage, but on the back face, there are two centrally-located flowers, whereas on the front face, there are centrally-located engraved initials inside a shield.  Likely produced in the late 1800s, it is engraved with the words 'AC Xmas 1918', and was clearly destined as a post-WW1 Christmas present to somebody. Even though it has been rather crushed while in situ, the hinges are still at…

A slightly incomplete probable knife handle, composed of a white metal core, and plated in iron. The handle is rectangular in shape, and oval in profile. It splays at the butt end, to make gripping easier, and becomes rectangular in profile. It is likely to be post-Medieval in date, due to having been found amongst other objects post-Medieval in date. However, other than its depositional context, there are few distinguishing features which could firmly place it to a more specific time-frame.  It is possibly connected to the nearby Stannon Quarry. White metal unidentified object fragment. A small concavo-convex billet of white metal with a curving surface which appears beaten on its convex surface and appearing gouged or distorted on its concave underside. Though the outer surface appears similar to the end of an early medieval ingot, the underside appears to indicate catastrophic damage arising from mechanical action or failure, and at all events is not what would be expected of the manual subdivision of a small ingot. Nor does the current mass relate to systems of measurement thought to have been observed in early medieval tim…

It appears from a slight dislocation on one side [to the right in the accompanying image] that tiny pins may have passed from sockets in the sphere, through discoid washers, to pass into the inner surface of the surroundin…
