These are bent inwards.<\/p>\n<p>The front has traces of an olive green patina with flecks of white metal, probably tinning. The rear face and the spikes are reddish brown.<\/p>\n<p>Height: 14.90mm; width: 14.84mm; thickness: 4.20mm. Weight: 1.32g.<\/p>\n<p>Similar mounts are recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. It has a trefoil knop at each end and at the front the main body has two slightly raised parallel bands. At the rear, the main body is convex and both knops are flat. At the junctions of each knop and the main body of the mount there is a central integral spike, circular in cross-section. Only the stubs of the spikes survive.<\/p>\n<p>The metal is reddish brown and has traces of a shiny dark green patina.<\/p>\n<p>38.76 x 11.52 x 5.62mm. The details are basic, with the comb atop the head suggested by a groove and the wings suggested by raised oblongs at each side of the body. The tail is crescent shaped and thin. Silvering is still present in the grooves beneath the wings and at the legs. The legs are resting on a small oval platform 6mm long and 4mm wide. A small nub, square in section on teh underside of the platform suggests that the figuring sat intop of a larger object, possibly fitting into a larger figurine scene, or other possibilities are a pin or knife handle.<\/p>\n<p>Ros Tyrell, FLO for Bucks, states in her record (BUC-FBC273) that a figurine of Mercury found at King Harry Lane, near Verulamium [St  Albans] includes at his feet a ram, a tortiose and a cockerel (Religion  in Roman Britain by Henig, p 61, fig 19). S-shaped in plan and symmetrical, each terminal is in the shape of an openwork triangular head, with a ring-and-dot eye in the trinagular 'snout'. The form is similar to dragonesque brooches of earlier date, and reminiscent of dolphin-headed buckles of a similar date.<\/p>\n<p>The erevsre is flat, and the object is D-shaped in section. A hole 2mm in diameter is placed at the top of each head. One is closed through iron corrosion, suggesting iron rivets held the mount to the leather (?) strap.<\/p>\n<p>David Williams, FLO fro Surrey, identifies this moun as on of a type \"distributed form Dura-Europos to Britain and were probably manufactured in Northern Gaul or the Rhineland\" (pers. comm).<\/p>\n<p>Similar can be seen and discussed in Celtic Art by the Megaws see p238.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Reavil, FLO for Shropshire, has identified a reference to these mounts in \"Sr.13 (page 126) in Evan Chapman's Catalogue of Roman Military Equipment  in the NMGW BAR 388, 2005. The rectangular frame for taking a strap is broken, with only the bases of the arms projecting from the body of the clasp.<\/p>\n<p>The surface has scrolling vegetal motif in relief, though obscured by corrosion. The underside of the clasp retains a thick, compact layer of iron corrosion.<\/p>\n<p>The decoration suggests a late 16th or 17th century date. Two further transverse grooves mark the start of the shoulder on each side. The upper hoop is rectangular in section, tapering to a D shaped oval at the back of the hoop. The patina is a dull grey and very smooth, probably suggesting a high white metal content. Small areas of green corrosion indicate that the ring is not made of silver, but it may have had a white metal coating. At the loop end it is straight and has a circular pin hole, 4.36mm in diameter. Close to this hole there is another smaller hole. At the opposite end, the sides of the plate taper and then expand to form a fan-shaped projection. At the centre of the narrowest part at this end there are the remains of a copper-alloy rivet. The front of the plate is decorated with stamped ring-and-dot motifs and the rear face is plain. The wire pin is copper-alloy.<\/p>\n<p>This object is corroded and has an olive green patina at the front.<\/p>\n<p>27.96 20.27 x 3.17mm. Weight: 4.15g.<\/p>\n<p>This buckle can be compared with a similar object from a late 13th- or early 14th-century context in London, which is identified as a strap-end (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 132, fig. 85, ref: 608). The London example has completely lost its buckle frame, but its identity as a buckle is suggested by the large circular hole at one end which is hard to explain except as a pin hole.
