A cast copper alloy coin (limesfalsum), copying an as of Commodus (AD 180-192) (Reece Period 14), with an unclear reverse. It appears that the coin was produced from a flawed clay mould.   Limesfalsa ('Frontier Forgeries') were first identified on the Rhine and Danube Frontiers.  An increasing number have been found in Britain and recorded with the PAS Database.  Two pieces from the same mould, found in Hertfordshire, do suggest that they were also produced in Britain.  It appears that many of these coins were actually produced in the AD 230s to …

An incomplete copper-alloy cast as of Hadrian (AD 117-38) (Reece Period 6). Reverse unclear, but possibly a standing figure  The dating of this coin is difficult.  Cast coins of Hadrian were probably produced close to his reign and have been found in the Sacred Spring at Bath.  However, it might be a limesfalsum, cast coins which were generally produced in the first half of the 3rd century AD.

A heavily worn copper alloy fragment from a Dupondius or As of probable late 2nd or 3rd century date. The obverse depicts a bearded radiate crowned head facing right. The reverse is laminated and all detail is lost. The identification as an As rather than a later radiate (Antoninus) is based on the patina and thickness of the coin fragment. The coin measures 21.8mm diameter, is 3.5mm thick and weighs 4.12 grams
