Record ID: NLM-4081BC
Object type: INGOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead alloy ingot. A round ingot of plano-convex section which has set in a shallow hollow, probably in a fine sand bed. A sand bed would be the usual requirement for a scheme of professional lead working. The metal retains a grey tint pointing to a relatively recent date though its inflexibility suggests this to be a eutectic lead alloy rather than lead. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900

Object type: SCISSORS
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy and iron possible scissors fragment. A small leaf-shaped iron blade fragment [tip lost] with a backing of thin copper alloy which appears to extend from the broken stub of a handle with an angled outer end and a low rib on one side; the loss of a counterpart is presumed. This might be from a pair of embroidery scissors, as most sets of shears for heavy duty tasks were made entirely of iron and are larger. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800

Copper alloy door fitting. Cast plate to surround the keyhole in a wooden door, with a keyhole-shaped aperture surrounded by a moulded rayed pattern which becomes ribbed or segmented on the thickened outer edge of the plate. The keyhole aperture also stands a little proud of its setting; a drilled hole below the hole is presumably for fixing the plate. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.6mm, Walton Rogers form B. A possibly moulded design has been partially carried over to one flat side only, unless these irregularities represent shrinkage in an open mould, and lipping appears on the opposite side. Patinated, and probably lightly distorted. The mass points to a primary function plying cord, if not as a flywheel for some other mechanical purpose. The size of spindle hole could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date, but the possible decoration on one side might rather point to …
