A small rectangular fragment of light blue translucent glass, it has a greenish tint when held up to the light; possibly window glass. The top edge is slightly thicker than the rest of the body. The obverse of the glass, in plan view, has a small rounded depression towards the top in the centre of the glass. Towards the bottom of the main body it appears to have sheared off at a shallow angle. The outer edges of the glass are both straight but with slight pitting. The reverse of the glass is flat and generally smoother than the obverse. The object weighs less than one gram. Probably p…

Cast window fragment, blue/green dating to the Roman period. Cast window glass panes are relatively thick with a characteristic flat, rough underside, a glossy, slightly undulating upper surface, frequently with tooling marks and a rounded edge (Boon 1966). It first appeared around the middle of the first century and became increasingly common on Flavian and later military sites as well as in villas and other domestic buildings. It is probable that window glass was made close to the site rather than being transported over a long distance. It may have been made from re-cycled blue/gree…

A fragment of blown window glass dating to the third or fourth century AD. Straight-sided. Greenish/colourless. Blown window glass was produced from the third century onwards and its colour and quality is consistent with that of fourth century vessels, occurring in greenish and yellowish/green colours with many bubbles and specks, typical of the late Roman period. It was generally blown as a long cylinder which was then opened out to form a double glossy pane (Harden 1961). Buildings occupied during the late third and fourth century often contained both cast and blown fragments

White [i.e. colourless] translucent bubble glass with a greenish tint and slight iridescence mainly on one side, possibly window glass. A thin [1.7mm] flat form with one straight made edge which is slightly curled or lipped during its manufacture might suggest this to be from a small pane from a window. The good condition tends to argue against a medieval date as the 'forest glass' of that period usually deteriorates to a darkened crumbly friable texture whereas this is solid, probably a soda glass made to a Roman recipe. Evidence for glazing at any period before the later post-mediev…

A piece of window glass of Post-Medieval date. The piece is broadly a parallelogram in plan with a narrow rectangular section. The surface of the glass is degraded in a manner similar to that seen on plant ash glasses of the medieval to post-medieval periods, likely caused by general weathering. Finds Advisor Kevin Leahy states that the regular edges appear diamond cut rather than crozed as would be typical of earlier pieces. There are also no signs of fire rounding present. It is therefore likely that this piece dates to the late post-medieval period. The glass fragment is 23.…

Piece of lead alloy with two flat sides joined by a thin cross bar giving an H-shaped section with a small piece of 17th-19th century window glass stuck between the sides. Possibly a crude repair for a cracked window along similar lines to the contemporary lead alloy pot mends or possibly a spash of lead onto broken glass.. It is 21.7mm by 25.7mm including the glass, 6.1mm thick and weighs 6.80 grams.

A fragment of cast pale green window glass of probably Roman date. roughly triangular in shape, measuring 35.66mm in length and 11.63mm in width and 3.95 in thickness and weighs 2.3 grams. No edges to the pane survive, so impossible to tell what the original shape was when complete. One face is rough to the touch with tiny wavy lines which would indicate the pane was made by pouring molten glass onto a slab of sedimentry rock, the other side is smooth and more translucent. Small air bubbles can be seen within the glass. Cast window glass first appeared around the middle of the 1st …

A fragment of glass, possibly blown window glass of probable Roman date. The object is flat, with breaks to all edges. Length: 20.22mm, Width: 12.73mm, Thickness: 1.92mm, Weight: 0.8g The fragment is of relatively uniform thickness and also flat leading to the conclusion that this is possibly window glass rather than from a glass vessel.

Probably complete cast copper alloy possible Window fitting or fitting for other household item. The fitting is flat in section and roughly semi-circular in plan with a short scrolled knop projecting outwards to either end of the edge of the semi-circle. This edge of the semi-circle is not straight but scalloped with the two scrolled ends following the pattern of this undulation. The main semi-circular part of the fitting has two sub-oval holes side-by-side. Although no good published parallel has been found it has been suggested that it is similar to known post-Medieval window fitt…
