Lead spindle whorl. Cast conical or plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 8mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A2. A crudely and thinly incised pattern of Vs or chevrons, points uppermost, passes round the wall. Patinated. The spindle hole size might admit a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date while its mass could permit this object to be used to spin a fine yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-850

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex or conical whorl with one flat side and a central moulded aperture tapering from an upper diameter of 8.2mm to a basal diameter of 6.8mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A2. The sides of the whorl are lightly circumferentially ribbed. Patinated. The spindle hole size might admit a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date while its mass could permit this object to be used to spin a fine yarn. The lipping of the upper surface as cast may show it was made in an open mould. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-850

Lead hem wight. Cast discoid weight with a central sunken panel on one side wherein lie three drilled stitching holes. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting a recent date. Though probably most are of Victorian date, these objects continue to be sold today for crafts. The provision of three holes rather than the usual pair is an unusual feature; this is also a little larger than normal for the type. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-2000

Lead weight. Cast pyramidal four-sided weight with a flat facet between each of its four sides and round its flat square base, and with a central longitudinal moulded aperture of diameter 3.8mm. Lightly patinated. The mass does not figure in a series recorded from medieval London (Egan 1998), and nor does it closely correspond to subdivisions of either Roman or post-medieval systems of measurement. The object might represent five ounces of 29.2gms under the medieval Tower system used for silver and bread – as the closest correspondence noted for it. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman…

Lead possible shot. A cast object comprising a strip or sprue of width 5mm with a series of seven peloidal balls, each of diameter 4mm and each at the end of a conical ingate. The strip is broken at one end and melted at the other. Patinated. This might be an expedient to cast birdshot or a blunderbuss or shotgun charge of pellets; a mechanical function seems unlikely given the soft nature of the material. Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-950
