Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A beach pebble with percussion markings in the centre of both faces, perhaps used as a hammerstone. A wide sub-oval in plan, lenticular in profile and an elongated oval in section. The ventral surface shows signs of dense pecking in an approximately circular area around 35mm in diameter. The surface pecking in the centre of the dorsal face is similar in extent but far less dense. The surface of the stone is uniformly pale creamy-grey in colour with multiple striations of red-brown iron carbonate. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach pebble from the Crackington Formation dating fro…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper, sub-oval in plan, semi-circular in profile and in section. Made on a primary flake removed from a beach pebble with cortex remaining on more than half the surface of the dorsal face. The very crude scraper edge was produced by the rapid removal of around 8 or 9 lateral flakes from the curved distal edge of the original flake. The resulting tool has an irregular edge with a large point at one point which may have also served as an awl or piercer. The original pebble was struck using a different stone without previously preparing a striking platform. The point of percus…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A thin flint concave scraper, sub-rectangular in plan although probably originally circular, elongated triangle in profile and flattened-dome in section. Made on a secondary flake with small patches of cortex remaining close to the proximal end. The striking platform is slightly to the left of the proximal end of the dorsal side. The scars of several shallow flakes are visible on the dorsal side, evidently to ensure that the resulting flake was fairly thin. Subsequently a large number of very small, fine pressure-flakes were removed from the distal and right hand margins of the flake …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A chopping tool, probably also used as a scraper, oval in plan, triangular in profile and semi-circular in section. Made on a primary flake, struck from a flint nodule, which has then been extensively and bi-facially re-worked although a large patch of cortex remains on the dorsal face. The distal margin of the steeply domed dorsal face has been sharpened by the removal of lateral flakes through about two thirds of the circumference of the tool. At the proximal end a single large flake, together with several smaller ones, have been removed at the margin of the dorsal face to enable th…

A horned scraper, sub-rectangular in plan, trapezoidal in profile and in plan. The dorsal face bears the scars of the removal of several earlier flakes. At the proximal end several shallow flakes have been removed to enable the user to grip the tool more easily at that end. The two sides are steeply angled from the margins as a result of the initial flake having been removed from a carefully pre-formed core. At the distal end several pressure flakes have been removed to form a sharp, concave edge with a pointed projection or horn on either side. The point of percussion is clearly visi…

Object type: BURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched microlithic burin from the Mesolithic period. Trapezoidal in plan, and profile, triangular in section. Both ends of the burin have been broken off in antiquity: the proximal end at a right angle and the distal end obliquely. The scars of two earlier longitudinal flakes remain on the dorsal face, resulting in a triangular section. At the proximal end of the left hand margin of the dorsal face the margin has been blunted by the removal of 4 or 5 pressure flakes. The resulting artefact could have been held comfortably in either hand and used as a perforating tool. The pointed…

A retouched flint microlithic blade, an elongated trapezium in plan, and trapezoid in both profile and section. A tertiary flake, the dorsal face of which bears the scars of the removal of three earlier, parallel flakes. The proximal end has been reworked by the removal of a small, oblique flake to produce a point which would have been suitable for engraving bone or wood. This has resulted in the loss of the striking platform and of the bulb of percussion from the ventral face. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A whetstone, made from a flat greywacke sandstone beach pebble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). Sub-oval in plan, both ends having been carefully shaped to a blunted point. The side margins are parallel and both surfaces are flat. All surfaces were polished to produce a completely smooth, polished artefact which is comfortable to hold, with no sharp edges or corners. The two flat faces are very slightly concave, suggesting that the whetstone was not subjected to extensive use and may have been lost soon after i…

A natural, unmodified beach cobble of uncertain date which has been used as a hammerstone. Sub-oval in plan, lenticular in profile and in section. The distal end is much wider than the proximal end and is pitted through use as a hammerstone. A row of larger pits on the ventral margin of this area appears to be the result of a fault in the stone, rather than a deliberate modification. Made from a greywacke sandstone beach cobble from the Crackington Formation dating from of the Upper Carboniferous age (332 to 290 million years BP). The surface stone is pale grey, with patches of darker…
