Body sherd from a glazed medieval jug with applied strip on the outer face. The high fired fabric is a reduced mid-grey with a mid-buff on the inner surface only. It has common fine-medium sand temper and very occasional angular pieces of patinated chert/flint up to 1.9mm and very occasional rounded quartz up to 1.2mm. The vessel appears to be wheel thrown with an green glaze on the outer face. On the outer face is a short section of an applied strip, 9.8mm wide and appearing to curve slightly. The strip is decorated with regularly spaced diagonal slashes. The fragment has abrade…

Rim sherd from a closed vessel, probably a cooking pot, dating to the 11th to 12th century. The rim is everted and has broken at the point it met the vessel wall. A small amount of wall on the inner face suggests a c. 120 degree angle between them. The upper part of the rim is widened and stands up slightly with a rounded beaded outer edge and vertical inner edge. There is also a groove running around the centre of the upper face of the rim. The fabric is hard fired and a pale orange to buff with abundent c.35% poorly sorted angular chert, some patinated, up to 2.5 with occasiona…

Small fragment probably from the wall of a cast copper alloy vessel. The piece is an irregularly shaped piece of copper alloy, thickening towards one side. Three diverging raised ribs run from the thicker to the thinner side. 28.3mm long, 19.8mm wide and 5.3mm thick, it weighs 8.06g. The material, proportions and width apart of the diverging ribs suggests this is part of a cast copper alloy vessel near the point a leg projected out, rather than part of a socketed axe. Cast copper alloy vessels were widely used for cooking over open fires from c.AD 1200-1800, being only grad…

A Medieval or Post Medieval copper alloy pot foot fragment, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1650. Only part of the foot and a small section of leg survives. At the base the leg expands out into the foot with the front projecting forward in a concave curve. The leg and foot are trapezoid in cross section with a wider, flat front face and narrower back. The piece is broken across the top with a worn break and has various deep, patinated, grooves and pits across the back and base of the foot which are probably damage, although some may have been caused during use and relate to poor cas…

A copper alloy fragment, possibly part of the handle from a vessel of uncertain date, perhaps Iron Age or Early Medieval. The piece is formed of an expanded top section joined to an arched strip which may start to flatten into a second expanded section just at the break. The two ends of the arch, if they are both flattened sections are not parallel suggesting it fitted onto a curved item. The top, expanded, plate section has a curved lower edge and broken upper dge and so the complete form is unclear. Two circular holes near the join to the arched strip hold seperate copper alloy …

Ceramic rim sherd from a greyware bowl of Roman date. The rim is expanded into a pointed oval shape with slight ridges at the top and outer side. The vessel wall becomes vertical at the top to meet the rim but below this slopes at 45 degrees. The entire height of the wall is not present but it thickens markedly towards the base. The fabric is a medium grey, burnt darker grey at the rim, with abundant, c.30% fine sand temper and common (c. 10%) rounded brown pellets, probably clay pellets, inclusions. It is not visibly micaceous. The breaks are lightly abraded. It weighs 35.12g and th…

Lead pot mend of 'rivet' form, probably Roman in date. The mend is formed of a strip of lead, D-shaped in cross section, highly convex on the front and flat on the back with two integral pegs. A line running around the side suggests it was built up from two lengths, placed one on top of the other and partially fused, one piece being longer than the other. The pegs are circular in cross section and have a harrower base ending in a bulbous end. The mend is now bent inwards slightly and is 53.3mm long, 10.5mm wide and 9.3mm thick, excluding the pegs, 15.9mm including them and weighs 32.4…

A group of 24 fragments of broadly 18th century pottery found in the same area with some probably late 17th century pieces, total weight 550g. All are highly abraded. The majority are local, North Devon wares, mostly coarse wares of at least two fabrics and some finer wares. The form numbers below refer to the Type series given in Allen 1984 Figure 63 . There are a few imported wares including two fragments of Westerwald style stoneware, one tin glazed plate or bowl and two fragments of Bristol slip decorated wares. Fourteen pieces of glazed red eathenware vessels dating to the end of the 17th to first half of the 18th century all found together in an area of the garden with a wine bottle and pipes of similar date. Calcereous deposits suggest highly acidic environment with ash, ie dung heap or latrine. The pieces mostly seem to be of the same fabric, high fired, dark to mid orange with occasional mid to dark grey thin cores and occasional (c.5%) fine sand inclusions including very occasional very fine white quartz.
