Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An early-medieval copper-alloy strap-end.
The upper two thirds of the strap-end are broadly rectangular in plan, the long sides having a slight outward bow. The uppermost element is a damaged strap slot, comprised of two plates, each with a corresponding pair of rivet holes and separated from one another by a gap. A crudely incised pelta is located immediately below what remains of the upper rivet holes. Below this, the upper surface of the flat-sectioned body is largely occupied by a decorative panel. A corroded white paste-like material fills much of this panel, obscuring any rem…

A medieval copper-alloy strap-end.
The strap-end comprises two joined elements: there is a cast upper plate, which extends into a basal terminal; and a plain back plate. At its base the upper plate tapers into a neck, which in turn extends into the moulded and grooved terminal, the exact nature of which is uncertain. The back plate is contained between the bases of the sides of the upper plate, creating a slot for the now-missing strap. Two copper-all…

A silver-gilt hooked tag, largely complete and in good condition, comprising three joined elements: a headplate, a hanger and a basal hook.
The central feature of the headplate's moulded decoration is a five-petalled flower head; this is surrounded by three subhemispherical bosses, one located in each of the three lobes. Two pellets decorate the perimeter, situated within the top and left-hand clefts respectively. The smoothness of the right-hand cleft suggests either that no pellet ever existed there, or, if it did exist, it may have been removed deliberately. A ropework border ma…
